NEW MUSIC: Jake Aldridge – King Of The World

Music acted as a catharsis for Jake Aldridge almost from the beginning of his award-winning career. At the age of 11, Jake’s father died prematurely when struck by lightning during a family fishing trip. Struggling to deal with this experience, Jake began writing poetry which evolved into songwriting as a means of coping with his grief. Slowly, he began producing music fusing country and pop into his folk-rock style creating a unique sound. As his talent progressed, so did his presence in the music industry and he was featured in RGM, Talk About Pop Music and Indie Music Plus – to name but a few. The latest addition to his repertoire is ‘King Of The World’.

 

 

 

It’s noted that the majority of humans display a desire for romantic relationships – a wanting to fall in love if you will. Living in an internet-driven society, modern adults tend to use online dating apps to find this ideal mate, and that was what Jake Aldridge did. Using the assumedly sex-driven dating app Tinder, Jake found his match in former Slimming World consultant Lisa Hartgrove. Two years later after several messages and dates, Lisa accepted Jake’s proposal of marriage.

Andy Williams sings that love is a many-splendored thing and Jake knows this. In the new track ‘King of the World’, he enchants us with his take on being completely in love but with a 21st-century twist. Instead of Williams’ soulful crooning, Jake uses pop to bear his innermost emotions.

Reminiscent of Ed Sheeran and Sam Mendes, ‘King of the World’ is an addictive guitar-driven ballad. Lyrically, Jake vividly illustrates his feelings of being both smitten and lucky to find someone that he deems “out of his league”; however, the joy of his relationship is enhanced with an upbeat melody. Using tranquil instrumentation, ‘King of the World’ rocks you in a warm, comfortable and entrancing basket of love. If this is what true love feels like, then I hope he remains King of the World forever.

Tracking down the sounds of David Gilmour

The following contribution is from David Gaylor, a long-time friend of Brain Damage, who has often helped out with various things. He takes a look at filling in those empty spaces in his collection, and also poses some questions to the BD readership who might be able to help him in his quest. We are always delighted to get contributions, so if you want to write an article or review, feel free to send it our way! Now, over to David and his search for all things related to David Gilmour over the years… So, in light of the Covid pandemic restrictions, what does an obsessive vinyl collector do to fill his spare time? This collector decided to explore the back catalogue and discography of David Gilmour. The starting point was the very helpful list put together by Chris Job originally published many years ago in the long defunct printed Brain Damage magazine. Also available were more updated lists on the internet which indicated that David had performed across many formats over the years for a number of artists. His involvement ranged from producer to guest artist. The journey begins in the very late sixties and is still ongoing in 2021. With the internet, there is now easy access to retailers across the world, and plenty of information sources (some more reliable than others), making the task a little easier than the one Chris Job faced originally – and the list of items has grown steadily since then too! Many fans would know some of the more common guest appearances David has done over the years, but there are also plenty which have “flown under the radar” and few people are aware of. I decided it would be a challenge to find them and add to my collection all those tracks on which David Gilmour himself performs…

Chester Kamen – Child Of The Damned

Today we have some more new music from respected guitarist Chester Kamen. We know that a good number of you have been enjoying these songs. Amongst many other artists, Chester has toured with Roger Waters, joining his band in 2002 and playing on subsequent tours, and with David Gilmour on his 2016 Rattle That Lock tour. He first played with David back in 1985 during the Live Aid show – David and Chester were both part of Bryan Ferry’s band for that show (as was Jon Carin). Chester has, like many musicians, kept himself busy whilst lockdowns and restrictions due to Covid-19 have called a halt to many things – in particular, live performance. In October, he shared his new piece of music called Take This, that runs for over 23 minutes. Chester told us that Take This is the first side of an album he is currently working on – following, or inspired by, the old Floyd blueprint of one long piece and several songs on the flip side. Since then we’ve seen the first few songs on the second side of the album: Brand New Day, Swimming, I’d Love To Turn You, Lover’s Lane, and Come The Revolution. The new song from Chester – Child Of The Damned – has just arrived, with what reminds us of an early 1970s Floyd vibe to it. Chester noted that there’s “not such a band feel this time. Just me in isolation in Scarborough with a 16 track tape machine and some bananas for food…” We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know from feedback we’ve had that the songs are proving popular.

Happy birthday to David Gilmour!

Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his birthday today (March 6th)! Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis. In 2019, some 120+ of David’s guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth (https://clientearth.org). He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-guest-appearance-at-richard-thompson-70th-birthday-co.html), playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. In 2020, on February 25th, shortly before all activity stopped around the world due to Coronavirus, David joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html) concert at London's Palladium, which has now been released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html).
