If you imagine a more electronic Taylor Swift, mixed with aspects of Gabriella Aplin and Ellie Goulding – you might land somewhere near Duchess‘ latest single ‘Close‘. The song glides effortlessly through its radio-friendly progression, with a smooth production style underpinning Duchess‘ relaxed and intimate vocal performance, which stars as the outstanding feature throughout the tune. Biographically written, the song describes the yearning for closeness with a loved one; and at this time it comes across as seemingly a very relatable topic indeed. This is emphasised by the repeating phrase “close isn’t close enough” that lands confidently during the chorus sections of the track, and it acts as a euphoric climax to a cleverly written piece of music that will leave you wanting more.

A particular highlight of mine is the attention-grabbing use of the vocoder effect during the pre-chorus sections of the song, and it’s this amalgamation of more orthodox pop writing alongside an interesting and fresh production style that makes this song a real joy to listen to. Despite ‘Close‘ being only the fourth release we’ve heard from her, It seems the sky is really the limit for the London-based artist. With more releases lined up for 2020, including some potential collaborations, Duchess is firmly fixed on our radar and definitely remains one to watch for the rest of 2020 and beyond.
