Klopp record gone, as Atletico Madrid make Adrian and Liverpool pay on break

Substitute Marcos Llorente scored twice in extra-time to help Atletico Madrid to a 3-2 win at Anfield and knock Liverpool out of Champions League in the last-16.

Roberto Firmino’s first goal at Anfield this season in extra-time looked to have the Reds on their way, but that was quickly cancelled out by Llorente on 97 minutes after a mistake from Adrian.

The stand-in keeper could only hit Joao Felix with his low clearance, and Felix’s reverse pass found Llorente on the edge of the box, who fired into the far corner with Adrian beaten.

And just eight minutes later Llorente worked an opening on the edge of the box after a counter-attack before shooting into the corner right footed from the edge of the box.

Fellow sub Alvaro Morata then capped a superb night for Atletico rolling the ball past Adrian to make it 4-2 on aggregate late on in extra-time as Jurgen Klopp lost his first European game at Anfield.

Wijnaldum TEAMtalk

Liverpool dominated and were frustrated by Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak for much of normal time.

However, Georginio Wijnaldum headed in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross shortly before half-time to put Liverpool ahead on the night and level on aggregate.

The Reds continued to have the better of the game in the second half and could have been out of sight with some more clinical finishing.

Andy Robertson headed against the crossbar before Trent Alexander-Arnold tested Oblak from distance and Kieran Trippier blocked Robertson’s effort from the rebound.

Robertson fired over from a Trent Alexander-Arnold cross with 10 minutes to go before Sadio Mane’s bicycle kick also cleared the crossbar on 84 minutes.

Liverpool Atletico TEAMtalk

Mo Salah then danced his way down the right before cutting inside and hammering an effort over the bar as Liverpool looked to get the job done in normal time.

And the Reds suffered a late scare in normal time when Saul Niguez headed home from a free-kick, but he was correctly given offside before Llorente entered stage left to fire a deadly brace.
