International rugby star may be forced to retire with immediate effect

Wales fly-half Gareth Anscombe’s career may be over, according to a report from The Rugby Paper.

The 29-year-old faces the grim prospect of missing a second successive season following surgery in a long fight to save his career.

Anscombe, who guided Wales to their Grand Slam almost two years ago has been forced to abandon hope of playing in the Six Nations and with it any prospect of making the Lions’ series in South Africa next summer.

Since damaging a knee during Wales’ pre-World Cup match against England at Twickenham in August 2019, the 27-cap number 10 has undergone three separate operations.

Surgeons have told the New Zealand playmaker ‘that they can do no more’ with Anscombe’s career now potentially over.

Cardiff Blues medical team are still hoping he could start playing again next season, but any more setbacks could see him possibly call time.
