Prime Minister Boris Johnson said that stadiums, including rugby, coul be open to fans far sooner than expected.
In October, he said audiences could come back in stadiums and conferences and businesses events could be allowed to resume subject to successful trials.
“We will pilot larger gatherings in venues like sports stadiums with a view to a wider reopening in the autumn,” said Johnson on Friday.

“From October, we intend to bring back audiences in stadiums.
“Again, these changes must be done in a Covid-secure way, subject to the successful outcome of pilots.”
He added: “It is my strong and sincere hope that we will be able to review the outstanding restrictions and allow a more significant return to normality from November, at the earliest, possibly in time for Christmas.
