Blow for Man Utd as creative force announces declaration to stay put

The final nail in the coffin of Man Utd’s hopes of signing James Maddison appears to have come through the Leicester playmaker’s latest comments.

Maddison, 23, has enjoyed a superb two years since his arrival at the King Power in 2018.

His seven goals and seven assists last term have been backed up with a further nine strikes and three assists this campaign, with his stellar performances earning himself his senior England debut last year.

Despite high-flying Leciester exceeding all expectations, speculation had swirled over a transfer to Man Utd.

The Red Devils are known to be targetting further reinforcements in the attacking areas, and Maddison was one such name mentioned on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s shortlist.

However, the former Canary recently appeared on BT Sport’s Team Talk, and (via the Sun) reiterated his desire to remain with the Foxes.

When asked if he’ll be remaining in Brendan Rodgers’ squad, Maddison declared: “Of course I am.

“It was one of the best decisions I’ve made, coming here. I love it.”

Foxes teammate Kasper Schmeichel revealed his concern for Maddison owing to the extra pressure he receives now being a fully fledged England international.

Appearing on That Peter Crouch Podcast (via the Sun), Leicester’s number one between the sticks said: “He can be whatever he wants to be.

“Sometimes I worry for him – being English, playing for England. It brings a different level of expectation and scrutiny.

“His ability is ridiculous. He’s got everything in his locker – the sky’s the limit for him.”

Football’s hiatus has affected every footballer in the same manner, though some have unfortunately failed to adhere to the government’s lockdown guidelines.

Not so Maddison, with the England star delivering a mature response when quizzed on how he’s coping.

“I’m just isolating, the same as everyone else,” he added.

“It’s tough at the minute because we have to stay inside but kind of keep fit as well because we don’t know when the season is going to resume.”

Meanwhile, Man Utd stopper David de Gea has dropped a big hint on where his long-term future will lay amid mounting pressure from Dean Henderson.

The on-loan Sheffield Utd goalkeeper has been in sensational form for the Blades this year, in stark contrast to the dramatic downturn in performances from De Gea since 2019.
