Welcome back friends, to another juicy slice of Beneath the Surface magic for you to all sink your teeth into. Boy oh boy, have got an extra special treat for you today!
We are very proudly joined by the creators of the new generation, online electronic music store Volumo. Big thanks to the creative masterminds Oleksandr Dzyubenko, Anton Severynenko, and Denys Borysov for taking the time to chat with us. We go behind the scenes of Volumo and how it came into being. So get comfy and let’s get stuck in!
What would you say first sparked your interest in music?
Oleksandr: I would say technology in the broader sense: recording and playing equipment, physical medium, instruments, radio, etc. Primarily due to my knack for all things tech.
How did you get into the music industry? Describe your journey up until this point.
Denys: Before creating Volumo, Anton and I spent many years in the music industry as DJs, sound producers, and owners of the boutique techno label Outstrip Music. At some point, we decided that we already knew enough about the music industry and were ready to take on a large-scale project to challenge Beatport, Juno Download, and Traxsource. The global electronic music market is enormous, and we have a niche to occupy.
How did the idea of Volumo take shape?
Anton: We comprehensively saw the industry’s problems and the existing services’ shortcomings. Publishing has always been too complicated; reports and payments take a long time with so many go-betweens involved. Over the years, the industry is increasingly inclined to please the mass audience, neglecting aesthetic and creative aspects and, simultaneously, the interests of artists and sound producers. We wanted to create more than just “another store,” aiming for an innovative new-generation product for a site that would first be oriented to the needs of artists and become a convenient, modern working tool for professional DJs and selectors.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Oleksandr: Richie Hawtin, Robert Hood, and Joris Voorn, among many others. Let’s hope the universe bestows these legends on us first.
What is the one message you would like to send out to the users of Volumo?
Denys: Support artists you love and invest in their longevity and creative freedom.
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity?
Anton: Don’t be afraid to bring chaos to the plate: improvise, mish-mash, and morph your regular tools and methods. Dare to challenge yourself to create something new and out of the ordinary for your flow.
What’s next for you? What do we have to look forward to?
Denys: A slew of exclusive releases on Volumo, expertly crafted DJ playlists, and many more surprises; that’s what we have in store for you.
