Beneath the Surface: Taydem Shoesmith

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

I can’t seem to really pinpoint a time where my interest for music began. Music has always been a big part of my life, and I’ve been singing since I could talk I think haha! What inspired me to start making music was actually my mom. She’s always loved my singing and she wanted me to write a song for her as a birthday gift. So that song I ended up writing for her was kind of my start to writing, and now about seven years later, I’ve made my first professional studio made song.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

I haven’t made much music yet, so I’m not sure I can specifically describe my music. Generally like to create music with a deep meaning within the lyrics, and a fun beat as the melody. While this first single “Are You Clapping?” was electronic/dance, I’m also looking forward to trying different genres.

What does your creative process look like?

My creative process is honestly pretty random. Most of the time though I have a day just to journal about what’s on my mind. Then a few days later I’ll come back and reread that journal entry, and usually something within it sparks an idea for a song. Sometimes though I wake up from a dream, and it gives me ideas for some lyrics. Typically I like having an overall idea and message of a song before I try to write specific lyrics.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

It’s always so hard to answer this question! One artist I’ve really liked since the beginning of her career is Camila Cabello. I instantly fell in love with her voice. She has such a unique tone, and I really like her style of lyric writing. If I got the chance to work with her, I think I’d learn so much.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

To my fans, it feels so weird saying that haha! Having people that support me and enjoy the music I’m making is something I’m so incredibly thankful for. I’ve never really believed in myself all that much, I just know I love music. Getting to share my love for music with other people has been so great, and I’ll keep working hard to try to improve my skills so that I can release even better music. Oh and I’m sorry for how long it’s taking to create a second single, hopefully it’ll be worth the wait!

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s Block?

One of the biggest ones for me is going on a walk outside. Just taking a step back from writing in general. When I get writer’s block it’s usually because I’m trying to force things to work together or trying hard to be unique, instead of just being real and letting things flow. So going outside, breathing in the fresh air always feels like a reset button on my frustrated mind.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

There are so many different genres I want to try in the future. Currently I’m working on a new song for a film that I will also be acting in. I don’t think I can say much about the film yet, but the concept is something I’m super excited about. It’s a genre of film that has always been intriguing to me. So I’m really excited to get the chance to write a song for it! It’s been a bit challenging so far trying to get the right sound and vibe down, but I’ll keep working to try to make sure it turns out okay.
