Barcelona could turn their backs on a move for Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum in favour of promoting an academy product.
Wijnaldum continues to be linked with a move to the Catalan club, where he would join up with Ronald Koeman. The Barca boss is reportedly keen to take him to the Camp Nou after being impressed during his time in charge of Holland. And with Wijnaldum set to be out of contract this summer, he has a perfect opportunity to secure his services.
For a long time, it has looked as though the 30-year-old’s move to Spain is inevitable. Indeed, some reports have even claimed the deal is as good as done.
However, there has been no official confirmation of that. Meanwhile, Wijnaldum himself recently insisted there has been no developments in regard to the situation.
The Spanish outfit’s money issues are also a problematic factor. President Joan Laporta has reportedly put all transfer dealings on hold as he looks into their financial position.
Youth policy could halt Wijnaldum move
But in an unexpected twist, Barcelona could now scrap their plans to sign the 30-year-old completely.
That is according to a report in the Metro, who say that they could favour blooding exciting young talent Ilaix Moriba instead.
Moriba, 18, has progressed through the famed La Masia academy and is now pushing for more first team opportunities. He has already featured eight times for the senior side, scoring twice.
He is now seen as one of the top young talents in their system. What’s more, Laporta is keen to ensure Barca esnure their own youth players develop into vital members of the squad.
Giving Moriba more chances would also fend off interest from elsewhere. Manchester United are amongst his admirers, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Should they press ahead with this plan, it would leave Wijnaldum in an awkward position. He has failed to agree on new terms with Liverpool, who are unwilling to match his demands.
Although, the Dutchman maintains that he is happy at Anfield. Therefore, there remains a chance he could stay on Merseyside.
