The Athletic journalist James Pearce has talked-up the potential of Layton Stewart after the teenager signed his first professional deal for Liverpool.
On Tuesday, the Reds announced that Stewart, who made the squad for the EFL Cup clash with Aston Villa in the latter stages of 2019, had officially signed professional terms with the European champions.
The 17-year-old has broken into the Under-23 side at Liverpool this term and scored a hat-trick on his last appearance for the Under-18s in January.
Shortly after the announcement was made, Pearce delivered his verdict.
The respected journalist branded Stewart a “really exciting young player” before revealing that the academy staff at Anfield “have high hopes” for the forward.
It remains to be seen whether the attacker can force his way into the first team over the next couple of years or so.
Call yourself a Liverpool expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?
However, the fact that he has been handed a professional deal strongly indicates that Liverpool believe that he is capable of making the next step.
