What shocked Gary Neville the most after Liverpool beat Man City & why referees need the international break

Liverpool 3 – Man City 1

Liverpool beat Man City 3-1 at Anfield in the Premier League on Sunday.

Fabinho blasted Liverpool into an early lead after Man City had a penalty turned down after Trent Alexander-Arnold handled in the box.

In the 13th minute, City were 2-down as Mo Salah found the target.

Sadio Mane fired Liverpool 3-up early in the second half, while Bernardo Silva scored a late goal for the Sky Blues.

What shocked Gary Neville the most after Liverpool beat Man City

Gary Neville recorded his latest podcast for Sky Sports after Liverpool’s win against City.

For Neville, the biggest surprise about Sunday’s match was a lack of invention from Pep Guardiola.

While Neville stopped short of saying that Guardiola has “run out of ideas”, the Sky Sports pundit was taken aback that City failed to conjure up any plan to tackle the Reds:

I didn’t feel it was very Pep-like today.

I expected Pep to come up with something.

I’m not saying what Pep would have come up with would have brought a different result, different outcome.

I got in the 90 minutes what I expected when I saw the teams.

In another line of attack against Man City’s performance at Anfield, Neville laid into City’s defence.

Of course, City have major defensive issues with the likes of Ederson and Aymeric Laporte out injured.

Yet, Neville accused City’s backline on Sunday of lacking “toughness” to cope with the onslaught Liverpool offered.

Why referees need the international break

Gary Neville has been one of the biggest defenders of VAR on TV this season.

Yet, it was another difficult day for those at Stockley Park after Man City had a penalty turned down at Anfield.

In his Sky Sports podcast, Gary Neville voiced his belief that the international break has come at a good time for VAR:

The referees need the international break. They need two weeks off to regroup, to reset.

VAR should not go away… I think they caused themselves a problem with the parameters they set themselves at the start of the season…

For the first two months of the season they were getting it right… But then all of a sudden a switch flipped, they started overturning decisions, and now their in a pickle because they are inconsistent.
