West Ham make Angelo Ogbonna contract decision as Italian continues recovery from injury

West Ham have reportedly made a decision on the future of Angelo Ogbonna, with the centre-back continuing to recover from an ACL injury.

Ogbonna spent time at Torino, Crotone and Juventus in his native Italy before joining West Ham for £10million in July 2015. He has gone on to make over 200 appearances for the Hammers in all competitions, scoring 13 times.

The 13-cap Italy international featured 11 times in the Premier League during the first four months of the campaign. He registered the winner in the 1-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park in October.

Ogbonna suffered a serious ACL injury the following month and had to have surgery on the problem. He was initially ruled out for the rest of the season. But he is now pushing to play before the final match of the campaign.

Ogbonna’s contract expires in the summer and his fitness situation led to uncertainty over a potential new deal.

Update on Angelo Ogbonna future

The Athletic reporter David Ornstein provides an update on the 33-year-old’s situation. He claims West Ham are preparing to trigger a one-year extension in Ogbonna’s current terms, keeping him at the London Stadium until 2023.

This will give David Moyes the option to put Ogbonna back into his starting eleven next season, should his recovery continue to go smoothly.

The Scottish manager also has Kurt Zouma, Craig Dawson and Issa Diop as centre-half options in his squad. Due to this, it may be tough for Ogbonna to play as regularly as he did before the long-term injury.

West Ham will have financial factors in mind when offering Ogbonna his one-year renewal. Such a contract will prevent him from becoming a free agent this summer, reducing concern of a cheap exit.

Should the Hammers opt to sell next January, then they will at least be able to get some money back on the £10m investment.

On the pitch, West Ham will focus on qualifying for Europe next season and reaching the Europa League final. They sit seventh in the Prem after 33 games, two points behind sixth-placed Arsenal.

Moyes’ side will play Eintracht Frankfurt over two legs for the chance to win their first piece of European silverware since the 1999 UEFA Intertoto Cup.
