Wednesday to offload big name in January to fund new additions

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk has reportedly been told he must offload players before he can bring any in, with Wednesday forward Fernando Forestieri linked with a move away.

According to The Sun, Monk has been told that wages and transfer money must be generated from selling the clubs assets before the club can sign players in January.

Wednesday have been linked with a number of strikers including Eddie Nketiah, Jonson Clarke-Harris, Josh Sims and Lyle Taylor.

The departure of Forestieri, who is one of the big earners at the club according to reports, would certainly free up ample wages for the addition of another forward.

Monk already has five strikers signed at the club and given Forestieri’s poor league form, a departure could benefit all parties involved.

The Italian playmaker has had a wretched season, beginning with a six-game suspension for alleged racial abuse.

Forestieri has also had a string of injuries, keeping him out of a matchday squad since November’s 3-1 win over Charlton Athletic.

First signed from Watford in 2015, Forestieri was Wednesday’s top-scorer in two play-off campaigns but since then, the Italian has only netted 12 times in a three-season drought.

The forward is only contracted at Hillsborough until the summer, meaning the club would have to sell him this January in order to make a profit.

On the pitch, Wednesday are sat just outside of the play-off spots following a decent start to the season.

The Owls knocked Premier League Brighton out of the FA Cup last time out, outlining the quality of the Wednesday squad.

The club, however, have been shadowed with an ongoing EFL financial investigation which could result in a fine, a points deduction or the club’s EFL membership being completely revoked.

Next up for the Owls is a trip to Elland Road to play table-topping Leeds United, a stern test for Monk’s men who are still awaiting a decision from the EFL surrounding their investigation.
