Tottenham new boy urges club to chase down Champions League place

Steven Bergwijn insists he made the move to Tottenham Hotspur at the right time, despite criticism from his former club PSV Eindhoven.

Bergwijn joined Spurs in January for a fee of £27m, and made an immediate impression by scoring on his debut against Manchester City.

However, the winger suffered an injury in March, putting a halt to his progress in the Premier League.

Despite being unable to build up momentum, the PSV youth product believes his transfer came at the right moment in his career – and that those at his former club who claimed it was motivated by money have been proven wrong.

“It has been good for all parties,” he told De Telegraaf (via Sport Witness).

“Things didn’t go well with PSV at the time, and I had the idea that everything in the days around the transfer was being put on me.

“At least I had that feeling. General manager Toon Gerbrands has made a bit of a fuss in the media, but he himself has now indicated that they should be happy with that deal.

“The other people at the club, such as John de Jong and Peter Fossen, solved it very neatly at the time.

“PSV stays in my heart forever. My representatives and I have had quite a lot to endure. Like we came to steal money! No, we just came to ‘bring’ 32 million.”

Reminiscing on his dream debut, Bergwijn believes the impression he made against City further cemented how successful his move to Spurs would be – and admitted that his first goal still gives him “goosebumps”.

“I’ve seen that goal again and again,” he said. “It still gives me goosebumps.

“For me, that transfer was just the right step at that moment. We were in a dip with PSV, stood at a great distance and the trainer (Mark van Bommel) was fired.

“With that goal against City, I immediately gagged some mouths. It’s a pity that I got injured pretty fast after that, but in the end, I only missed one game.”

When football returns, Bergwijn will be closer to being ready to contribute again, and he has urged the side for one final push for Champions League qualification.

Spurs are currently in 8th place, seven points behind the top four – although they are just four points behind Manchester United in fifth, a position which could be enough to qualify for the Champions League if Manchester City’s European ban is upheld.

“For me, the goal is clear: to secure Champions League football,” he explained.

“We have to move on. It’s time to create more of those moments, like the goal against Manchester City.”
