Roger Waters concludes his 2022/2023 tour

Well, that’s it – for now, at least. Roger Waters has now completed his 2022/2023 This Is Not A Drill tour, with his show in Quito, Ecuador, with the South American dates concluding the 56 shows this year, which joined the 43 last year. The majority of the dates were performed “in the round”, which Roger and his band in the centre of auditoriums, with Roger occasionally visiting the different “arms” of the stage structure during the show. For the final, stadium shows, a more conventional staging was employed due to the nature of the venues. To answer those who HAVEN’T yet emailed us to ask, there aren’t any dates currently confirmed for 2024, or any other confirmed activity for Roger. There has been talk about him recording another album, and for those who went to, or heard about, the London Palladium shows in October (which presented his Redux version of The Dark Side Of The Moon) he has been writing his memoirs. He read out three sections on the first night, covering life in Cambridge, Syd Barrett, and a friendly duck… There are no details of when the book will appear but obviously we will let you know once we have details. We’re also waiting to hear if there will be a live album/video from the tour released at some point. Again, once we have the confirmed information, we’ll let you know. If any of you went to ANY of the shows over the last two years, and would like to share your views on them, please get in touch. We’d love to include your contributions!

Roger Waters: The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux – London Palladium Premiere

Last night saw the much anticipated London live premiere of Roger Waters’ The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux. Held at the historic Palladium, which even has the ashes of performers under the stage floorboards, the 2,286 capacity venue was packed with those eager, and curious, as to what was going to occur. Tonight sees the second of the two shows there, so today, we WON’T reveal much about the event, so as not to spoil any surprises. With the experience of last night, there are a few important things we can talk about, and prepare people who are going to the second show this evening. First, a general reminder that they are very strict on phones, cameras, even smartwatches, and they are locking these in pouches so are unaccessible inside the Palladium. Therefore, please ensure you have a separate payment card for use at the bar or merchandise stand, as you won’t be able to use contactless on your phone. VERY IMPORTANT TOO – switch the phone off before going in the pouch, or at least put it on silent. Last night in quiet parts of the first half, phones could be heard, but not silenced as they were in their pouches. They will be in them for a number of hours, so best to just switch them off – save your battery! There’s merchandise on sale – the orange vinyl 2LP (also available from Roger’s online store) as well as the CD and cassette (this is again an Roger’s online store exclusive). There was a limited number of special prints, but with just 100 numbered examples they went fast – maybe there will be more tonight? Finally, there was a commemorative t-shirt and hoodie for sale. Those with a VIP package get a nice bag, with a t-shirt, standard print, guitar picks set and some badges. The show itself is in two halves. The first, “other stuff”, and the second, The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux in full. The scheduled timings were: doors 6:30pm, first half 8pm, 8:50pm interval, 9:10pm Redux, 10pm end. Unfortunately, Roger came on late (around 8:15pm) and therefore the timings all were thrown out. The first half was a lot longer than scheduled, and as Roger himself said at the end of that half, the start of the second half would be a 20 minute film BEFORE performing the Redux Dark Side. The show therefore finished just before 11pm, AND obviously it took a while to leave the venue as everyone needed to get their pouches unlocked. Please bear this in mind for this evening to avoid stress if you have trains etc to catch! For the show itself, Roger seemed in great form (although clearly suffering with a cold or allergy) and it was all very entertaining. In the first half he mentioned his forthcoming book, which he said was called “I’ll See You On The Dark Side Of The Moon: Memoirs Of A Lanky Prick”! The staging and lighting was simple but very effective, particularly in the second half. Roger was accompanied by no less than 14 musicians – a six piece string section, a few members of his current touring band (Jon Carin, Jonathan Wilson, Gus Seyffert, Robert Walter and Joey Waronker), and some others, including a theremin performer, taking the slide guitar parts into an eerie new realm! We’re just trying to get all their names for you. For all those going tonight, have a great time! We’ll elaborate more on how things unfolded tomorrow…

Danish celebration for Roger Waters’ 80th birthday

Roger Waters will be turning 80 on September 6th. Still incredibly active, Waters has a huge number of fans and advocates in Denmark. Three of them are performing on Waters’ birthday to celebrate his words, music and activism on a night that combines a one-hour lecture with a 90-minute-long acoustic concert. Thomas Ulrik Larsen, esteemed songwriter, musician, journalist and lecturer, and friend of Brain Damage, opens the program with a talk about Roger Waters’ background, the Pink Floyd years, solo career and Waters’ current standing in today’s musical and political climate. After the lecture Thomas Ulrik Larsen (on vocals and guitar) will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Anders Haarh and singer/pianist Stine Liebman. The trio goes by the name Shrink Freud and plays acoustic interpretations of Roger Waters’ best songs from his Floyd years as well as from his solo albums – both classics and rarities. The venue is Kulturium, which is just south of Copenhagen, and the admission fee is a modest 80 Danish kroner (the equivalent of eight British Pounds). You can get your tickets for the birthday bash at Kulturium.dk (https://kulturium.dk/kalender/event/show/fdselsdagsforedrag-om-pink-floyd.html).

Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond opens tonight in Italy

Opening this evening at the Palazzo Mezzacapo, in Maiori, Salerno, Italy, is a new exhibition – Hipgnosis Studio: Pink Floyd And Beyond. The exhibition runs until 27th August celebrating the 50th anniversary of The Dark Side Of The Moon. On display will be 55 large-format works, from the band’s most iconic covers to their preparatory works and out-takes, and will tell the story of the collaboration between the Hipgnosis design studio and Pink Floyd. In an interview for the opening of the exhibition, Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell said: “I met Pink Floyd at Abbey Road studios to listen to the recordings of the new album and talk about the cover. The keyboardist, Richard Wright, asked us not to do one of our usual surrealist works, but something simpler. A week later, while reading an American physics magazine, Storm noticed a prism which, when struck by a beam of light, created a rainbow. It’s perfect, he said. We didn’t have computers and software, so I took some crayons and made a drawing. When we showed it to Pink Floyd they chose it straight away”. Po, who is a designer, photographer and director, but above all co-founder with Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis, said that the exhibition in Maiori gave “an emotional contrast between the Baroque palace and my works. I would never have thought that half a century later that prism would have been an icon: on the street you see people wearing t-shirts with that logo, it’s the first thing that struck me even when I arrived in Naples. Of course the fact that Pink Floyd sold 50 million copies of that album didn’t hurt.” The exhibition is open from Monday to Friday between 6pm – 9pm, and on Saturday and Sunday from 7.30pm – 11.30pm.
