New book – Pink Floyd and The Dark Side of the Moon: 50 Years

A potential addition to your Floydian bookshelves is published on March 23rd next year, tying in with the 50th anniversary of the release of one of the most iconic albums of all time. Martin Popoff’s Pink Floyd and The Dark Side of the Moon: 50 Years is a new, slipcased hardback book promising to delve into the detail of the band’s 1973 epic. The publicity for the book notes that “veteran rock critic Martin Popoff leaves no stone unturned in taking apart Pink Floyd’s generation-spanning masterpiece, The Dark Side of the Moon, while exploring each of the album’s 10 tracks and their themes of madness, anxiety, and alienation. Chapters cover: The state of Pink Floyd as of 1972, with special emphasis on deposed founder Syd Barrett

Pink Floyd light up Battersea Power Station for Animals Remix release

As hinted at on the official Pink Floyd social media channels last week, this week London’s Battersea Power Station, which has been undergoing major renovation and rebuilding, was lit up to mark the release of the Floyd’s superb Animals 2018 Remix on LP, CD, DVD, Blu-ray and Super Audio CD (SACD) (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/now-announced-pink-floyds-animals-2018-remix-on-multiple-for.html). With a test run on Tuesday night working well, it was full steam ahead for last night as you will be able to see from the short video below. On the first night, there were a variety of different colour projections and chimney colours. If you fancy taking a look yourself, it is running again tonight (Thursday) between 8:30pm – 11pm. With the Battersea Power Station site a lot more open these days, there will be various vantage points you might want to take, but clearly there’s also a good view from across the River Thames as well.

Official Pink Floyd 2023 Calendar now available to order

As we head toward the final part of 2022, it’s the time to try and focus on the future with as much positivity as we can in these troubled times, with the Official Pink Floyd 2023 Calendar. It’s a perennial Floyd fan favourite – particularly as a gift at Christmas time. An item which has been produced for many years now, and designed for use hanging on walls, the standardised format is roughly the same size as a vinyl album – roughly 12 (or 30cm) square, with the calendar opening up to have a double page spread per month. The calendar this year is a celebration of the band in its later years, via various images, record sleeves, and suchlike, some of which were newly revealed for The Later Years box set. The images here show all twelve monthly images, along with the front cover. The calendar each year is often squirrelled away as a collectable for the years to come, and earlier examples are now quite sought after. Further dates have been released for the 2023 Roger Waters This Is Not A Drill tour of Europe, with some tickets already on sale, and most of the newly announced shows going on presale this coming Wednesday, with the general sale starting on Friday. Tickets for some of the shows are already selling very quickly. Important: please check the individual show(s) you are interested in for confirmation of the exact ticketing details for that event, as they might differ from the majority. This European tour announcement is on the back of his current tour of the US and Canada, which is 30 shows in, with 12 still to play. The new staging sees the band playing “in the round”, with Roger prowling the stage to present to all sides of the arenas. Above is a new screen, arranged in a kind of cross. We don’t want to say too much for those who are trying to avoid spoilers! You might also notice from this new graphic to support the European tour, that it refers to “his first ever farewell tour” – make of that what you will, not least as a farewell tour isn’t normally referred to as that person’s “first ever”! Maybe it is Roger having a little joke… We suspect the following list will grow quickly, so please keep checking back for more details. Each show will link off to a specific page for that event, including ticket links, directions to the venue, and – once the show has taken place – details of the set list, video from the show, and submitted reviews and pictures from kind Brain Damage readers. Nick Mason talks about the 2018 Remix of Pink Floyd’s Animals – out Friday

In a new interview with Consequence Of Sound (https://consequence.net/2022/09/nick-mason-interview-pink-floyd-animals-2018-remix/), Nick Mason revealed he kept out of the arguments over the sleeve notes for the upcoming release of the incredible 2018 remix of Pink Floyd’s Animals. The remix (including surround versions) is out this Friday on LP, CD, Blu-ray and Super Audio CD (SACD), with a deluxe edition gathering together the first of those three, with a DVD containing the same material as the Blu-ray, all in a well-designed gatefold cover. Nick said: “David and Roger had a major disagreement about the liner notes, and like all great world wars no one can quite remember what it was about now and what the problem was. But there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and eventually some sort of resolution was reached. I managed to stay well out of it.” Adding to the delay in the release was Covid and Brexit. Nick also praised the new cover designs (there’s two different ones, with the main, dusk image joined by a darker, night-time shot for the Blu-ray cover) with the return to Battersea: “I think its terrific, and it’s a continuation of an idea we’ve had before, which is sort of updating something that has existed — including the 1971 Relics compilation and last year’s reissue of 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason”. German ‘Classic Rock’ magazine focuses on Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon

Now in German stores is the new issue of that country’s edition of Classic Rock magazine (cover date September 2022), with their cover story: “Pink Floyd – the journey to the dark side”. In the article, ’50 Years: The Songs – The Tour – The Myth’, they look at what lead to what is probably the band’s best known album. The publishers say: “In early 1972, Pink Floyd were toying with ideas for their next record without any real direction in mind. Only one thing was certain: songs were to be written before a planned UK tour, so that they could then be tested and worked out live. A year later, they came out of Abbey Road studios with an album that would overshadow everything they had done before. CLASSIC ROCK tells the story of their journey to THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON – and why this milestone nearly
a different, far less associative title. Elsewhere in the magazine are articles on Kate Bush’s Hounds Of Love, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones and more. Roger Waters: This Is Not A Drill – European tour 2023

The first dates have been released for the 2023 Roger Waters This Is Not A Drill tour of Europe, with tickets tending to go on pre-sale this coming Wednesday, September 14th, with the general sale of tickets following on Friday, September 16th. Important: please check the individual show(s) you are interested in for confirmation of the exact ticketing details for that event, as they might differ from the majority. This European tour announcement is on the back of his current tour of the US and Canada, which is 27 shows in, with 15 still to play. The new staging sees the band playing “in the round”, with Roger prowling the stage to present to all sides of the arenas. Above is a new screen, arranged in a kind of cross. We don’t want to say too much for those who are trying to avoid spoilers! You might also notice from this new graphic to support the European tour, that it refers to “his first ever farewell tour” – make of that what you will, not least as a farewell tour isn’t normally referred to as that person’s “first ever”! Maybe it is Roger having a little joke… We suspect the following list will grow quickly, so please keep checking back for more details. Each show will link off to a specific page for that event, including ticket links, directions to the venue, and – once the show has taken place – details of the set list, video from the show, and submitted reviews and pictures from kind Brain Damage readers. Here’s the dates so far, as revealed on Roger’s website, along with ticketing websites in some of the countries. We’re keeping an eye out for further shows as they get added to the schedule.
