Hipgnosis Exhibition opens in Dutch city of Groningen

The following article was kindly written by Charles Beterams, a self-confessed Pink Floyd addict and owner of FloydStuff.com (https://www.floydstuff.com), an online store stuffed full of PF goodies. Charles supplied the pictures (below) from the opening event as well. He’s also the man behind a range of excellent books about the band, with the latest book – Any Colour You Like: The Dark Side Of The Moon On Vinyl (https://www.floydstuff.com/product/8818296/pink-floyd-any-colour-you-like-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-on-vinyl) – the result of Stefano Tarquini’s lifelong quest and gathers together the 700 currently known variations of Pink Floyd’s masterpiece on record. The Groninger Museum in the northern city of Groningen has become somewhat of a centre for interesting musical exhibitions. Following on from the highly successful David Bowie exhibition and a recent one on the Rolling Stones (which will see a reprise later this year) the museum – lead by director Andreas Blühm – was nominated for hosting the Their Mortal Remains exhibition. Despite the museum’s spacious rooms the exhibit didn’t fit in terms of size and especially height. Following discussions with Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell who curated the Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains in London and subsequent cities across the globe, a plan was raised to focus on the visual side of things and create a new exhibition on Hipgnosis. The result of that can be seen (or absorbed) until 14 May in no less than eight rooms in the Mendini Pavillion of the museum. The opening event to place in the presence of Aubrey Powell, Peter Curzon and Pink Floyd’s curator Paula Webb Stainton and also attracted people like photographer Claude Vanheye who took the famous 1968 shots of the band during their visit to Amsterdam. Director Andreas Blühm introduced Aubrey Powell who discussed the hard work it was to get all those sleeves done in an pre-digital era but with enormous budgets on the other hand. With the close connection between the band and Hipgnosis showed in the large presence of Pink Floyd in the exhibition with the largest room fully dedicated to The Dark Side Of The Moon, but also highlighting Wish You Were Here, Animals and two beautiful walls with front of house and backstage photos. Other artists featured in the exhibition include Paul McCartney, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Peter Gabriel and 10CC. Both the city of Groningen and the exhibition are well worth a visit. Details and directions can be found at groningermuseum.nl (https://www.groningermuseum.nl/en/art/exhibitions/hipgnosis)

Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis – Mark Blake

Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/178870567X/braindamage-21) takes a close look at arguably the principal music industry designers, Hipgnosis. From the late ’60s, Hipgnosis created some of the most iconic and ubiquitous album artwork of all time. Their original lifespan coincided with the golden age of the 12-inch LP, beginning just as the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper made the record sleeve the ultimate blank canvas and ending just as new technology looked set to usurp vinyl. Having originally been approached to design an album cover for their friends Pink Floyd, students Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Storm Thorgerson would go on to define the visual identity of rock and roll for the next fifteen years, swiftly gaining international prominence for their famed The Dark Side of the Moon artwork. This paved the way for other major musicians to set foot in the surreal photo-design world of Storm and Po, resulting in seminal Hipgnosis creations for the likes of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Genesis, Black Sabbath, ELO and Yes. In this authorised account, with access to previously unpublished material and exclusive contributions from David Gilmour, Jimmy Page, Peter Gabriel, Roger Waters, Robert Plant and extensive insights from Aubrey Powell, alongside past interviews and conversations with Storm, Blake goes behind the scenes of the Hipgnosis partnership to reveal the pioneering ambition and grand vision that led to their success, as well as the clashing egos and artistic differences that undermined it. The Hipgnosis story also offers hitherto-untold insight into some of music’s most legendary bands, as viewed through the prism of the people who shaped their imagery and cultural legacy. Blake, who is best known in the Floyd community for his excellent book, Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of Pink Floyd (known as Comfortably Numb in the US) which originally came out in 2007, and subsequently updated, has achieved something quite special with this book. Anyone with trepidation over the “authorised” element of the title need not worry. The book pulls no punches with regard to laying out mistakes made, the difficult relationship between Storm and Po, the heavy drug ingestion at times, the sense of self-importance and ego which affected things, arguments between Hipgnosis and various bands, musicians and management, and the regret over certain decisions and attitudes.

If These Walls Could Sing – Abbey Road documentary

This month, the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London is celebrating its 90th anniversary, and as part of these, a new documentary film has been announced. Directed by Mary McCartney, daughter of Paul, the film – If These Walls Could Sing – explores the history of the studios, with the experiences and memories of various musicians who recorded there. A number of the many iconic artists who played there, or recorded film soundtracks, have been filmed for the documentary, including Paul McCartney, Elton John, Jimmy Page, Noel Gallagher, John Williams, George Lucas, and recounting their memories of recording various Pink Floyd albums, Roger Waters and David Gilmour. A trailer for the documentary has been released, and can be seen below. The documentary is due to be available for streaming on the Disney+ subscription service from 16th December 2022, and we suspect, later released on DVD and Blu-ray (although there are no details of that currently).

Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis – new book coming

Us and Them: The Authorised Story of Hipgnosis (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/178870567X/braindamage-21) takes a close look at arguably the principal music industry designers Hipgnosis. Between the late ’60s and early ’80s, design house Hipgnosis created some of the most iconic and ubiquitous album artwork of all time. Their original lifespan coincided with the golden age of the 12-inch LP, beginning just as the Beatles’ Sgt Pepper made the record sleeve the ultimate blank canvas and ending just as new technology looked set to usurp vinyl. Squaring The Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis

Just given an airing at the Rodeo Screening Room in Los Angeles, California, on August 24th as part of the Telluride Film Festival, is a new documentary from celebrated photographer, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn. Squaring The Circle: The Story Of Hipgnosis, which is 101 minutes long, tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio, Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognisable album covers of all time. They formed Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the ferment of the sixties and became rock royalty during the boom time of the seventies. They conjured into existence sights that no one had previously thought possible, produced visuals which popularised music that had previously been considered fringe, and were at the white-hot centre of the maddest, funniest and most creative era in the history of popular music. During this period, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like – Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note, but they changed music. The film features brand new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour & Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher, and many more. As yet we don’t have details of any upcoming screenings, or streaming possibilities, although we suspect such information will be available soon. In the meantime, here’s a quick look at part of the documentary, with Storm, Po, David, Roger and Nick all talking about the cover to Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother: SQUARING THE CIRCLE (the story of hipgnosis) | Clip | Anton Corbijn | Raindog Films (https://vimeo.com/743119190) from Raindog Films (https://vimeo.com/user157295855) on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com).

New Hipgnosis “Untold stories” book coming from Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell

The lockdown period seems to have been beneficial, not just for reducing the spread of infection, but encouraging writers to pull books together, and we are now starting to see the fruits of these labours, with a number of publications being announced… and here’s another. Arriving in bookshops, both online and along the high street, on October 21st, 2021, is a new, 320-page book from Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell – Through the Prism: Untold rock stories from the Hipgnosis archive (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0500252378/braindamage-21). Founded in 1968 by Po, Storm Thorgerson and Peter Christopherson, graphic design firm Hipgnosis gained a legendary status by transforming the look of album art through their designs for artists such as AC/DC, 10cc, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Paul McCartney, Syd Barrett, and Black Sabbath. The publishers promise that in the book, “Powell presents brutally honest, entertaining and revealing insider stories from the world of rock, featuring an eclectic cast of pop stars, comedians, actors, managers, gangsters, and inspirational world figures from 1966 on. His narrative is packed with anecdotes – from the founding of Hipgnosis to surviving drugs busts, and from the creative process behind the most iconic album artworks of all time to mounting the Pink Floyd exhibition, Their Mortal Remains – and is richly illustrated with Hipgnosis artwork and Powell’s own photographs. “Drama and creativity are the common threads throughout these amazing stories. With candor and insightful reflection, Powell reveals how he and Storm became an effective creative partnership despite their volatile relationship; how the final colour artwork for Led Zeppelin’s Houses Of The Holy was created; how the most iconic album cover of all time – The Dark Side Of The Moon – came about; and how the 2017 Pink Floyd retrospective became the largest and most successful music exhibition ever mounted by the Victoria and Albert Museum – despite the deeply antagonistic and dysfunctional relationship between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. Throughout, Powell exposes how the trappings of fame and glory upset the balance of everyday life, bringing creativity and destruction in equal measure. “Packed with exciting insider stories and anecdotes featuring famous musicians, managers, and actors, Through the Prism is a must-have for music and pop-culture fans.” Certainly sounds a cracking read, which we can’t wait to get our hands on. You can order this book through the following links, taking advantage of Amazon’s free pre-order price guarantee – should their asking price drop at any point between you ordering it, and release, they will automatically charge you the lowest price during that period! Pink Floyd Live At Knebworth 1990 being released on CD, 2LP vinyl, and digital

It has just been announced that next month, on April 30th, 2021, Pink Floyd Live At Knebworth 1990 will be released for the first time on CD, 180g heavyweight double vinyl LP, and digital platforms. The concert was part of the star-studded 1990 Silver Clef Award Winners performance at Knebworth House, in Hertfordshire, England, headlined by the Floyd. The concert, in front of around 120,000 fans, was a fundraiser for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Charity, and also included Paul McCartney, Genesis, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Cliff Richard The Shadows, Elton John, Status Quo, Tears For Fears, and Robert Plant Jimmy Page. The Floyd set was performed by the touring line-up of the late 1980s, with a slight change to the vocalists – joining Durga McBroom was Sam Brown, her mother Vicki, and Clare Torry (original vocalist for The Great Gig In The Sky, resuming her role for this show, three years after doing the same for Roger Waters at his pair of 1987 Wembley Arena gigs). Saxophonist Candy Dulfer and keyboard player Michael Kamen also joined the band for this one-off show. The audio has been remixed by David Gilmour and Andy Jackson, and following its appearance in 2019’s The Later Years box set, is now available on CD or double vinyl for the first time as a standalone album. Nick Mason looked back at the concert, and remarked: “There is something special about Knebworth. We all still have fond memories of playing there in the 70’s, and this show was no different. As a North London boy this was almost a home game, but with the added delight of being the re-assembly of the band after a fairly mega tour that had lasted for well over a year. It was also an opportunity to get the wonderful Candy Dulfer to play - I had been a fan of hers for quite a while, and it was just a shame we didn’t have an opportunity to utilise her for more. We also had our dear friend Michael Kamen guesting. Michael had contributed so much to PF over the previous ten years, it’s great to have something of his playing on the recording.” To order either physical edition, you can do so from the following Amazon stores (thus helping Brain Damage with a much needed contribution towards site running costs, at no extra cost to you!): Pink Floyd Live At Knebworth 1990 – 2LP 180g double vinyl: Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08Y4HCFYV/braindamage-21)Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08X7W9J2J/braindamage-20)
