Nick Mason collaborates on new song for The Cancer Awareness Trust

Released today (Friday, December 16th) is This Christmas Time (https://thecancerplatform.com/this-christmas-time), a beautiful new song to support a new online global project providing information to people living with cancer, led by The Cancer Awareness Trust. Nick Mason, along with Ozzy Osbourne (who narrates a moving introduction), Andy Taylor of Duran Duran (who recently revealed his own battle with cancer) and Noddy Holder, lead a group of renowned artists on the song. It’s Nick’s second collaboration with the charitable endeavour founded by Professor Sir Chris Evans – the first being 2018’s One More Yard (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/archive/one-more-yard-song-out-now-including-ronnie-wood-and-nick.html). On the new project, Nick said: “It’s an honour and a delight to be asked to play on this record…I mean, what’s not to like? My favourite recording studio, the opportunity to work with great artists on a wonderful track – and for the most worthy cause… Oh, and complimentary lunch in the Abbey Road canteen!” This Christmas Time, written by Prof. Sir Chris Evans (who also played guitar), is inspired by the heroism and letters home from World War 1 British soldiers at Christmas. It has been released on Evamore Records and is now available on streaming and download platforms. The song is available to play on The Cancer Platform website, where you’ll also find the full video for the song (the video below is purely the audio), photos of the recording sessions, quotes from the artists and information from Prof. Sir Chris on how he put the songs together and why (https://thecancerplatform.com/this-christmas-time).

Pink Floyd featuring Andriy Khlyvnyuk releasing new music

Just announced: Pink Floyd are releasing new music in support of the people of Ukraine entitled ‘Hey, Hey, Rise Up’, which will be available digitally from midnight tonight, with all proceeds going to Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief. The track (recorded last Wednesday, March 30th) sees David Gilmour and Nick Mason joined by long time Pink Floyd bassist Guy Pratt and Nitin Sawhney on keyboards, and features an extraordinary vocal performance by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band Boombox. Andriy’s vocals are taken from his Instagram post of him singing in Kyiv’s Sofiyskaya Square. The song itself, ‘Oh, The Red Viburnum In The Meadow’ is a rousing Ukrainian folk protest song written during the first world war which has been taken up across the world over the past month in protest of the invasion of Ukraine. The title of the Pink Floyd track is taken from the last line of the song which translates as ‘Hey, hey, rise up and rejoice’. In the press release, Gilmour, who has a Ukrainian daughter-in-law and grandchildren said: “We, like so many, have been feeling the fury and the frustration of this vile act of an independent, peaceful democratic country being invaded and having its people murdered by one of the world’s major powers”. Gilmour explained how he came to know Andriy and his band Boombox. “In 2015, I played a show at Koko in London in support of the Belarus Free Theatre, whose members have been imprisoned. Pussy Riot and the Ukrainian band, Boombox, were also on the bill. They were supposed to do their own set, but their singer Andriy had visa problems, so the rest of the band backed me for my set – we played Wish You Were Here for Andriy that night. Recently I read that Andriy had left his American tour with Boombox, had gone back to Ukraine, and joined up with the Territorial Defence. Then I saw this incredible video on Instagram, where he stands in a square in Kyiv with this beautiful gold-domed church and sings in the silence of a city with no traffic or background noise because of the war. It was a powerful moment that made me want to put it to music.” While writing the music for the track, David managed to speak with Andriy from his hospital bed in Kyiv where he was recovering from a mortar shrapnel injury. “I played him a little bit of the song down the phone line and he gave me his blessing. I hope that we do something together in person at some point in the future.” Gilmour wanted “to show our support for Ukraine and in that way, show that most of the world thinks that it is totally wrong for a superpower to invade the independent democratic country that Ukraine has become.” The video for ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ was filmed by acclaimed director Mat Whitecross and shot on the same day as the track was recorded. Gilmour: “We recorded the track and video in our barn where we did all our Von Trapped Family live streams during the lockdown. It’s the same room that we did the ‘Barn Jams’ with Rick Wright back in 2007. Janina Pedan made the set in a day and we had Andriy singing on the screen while we played, so the four of us had a vocalist, albeit not one who was physically present with us.” The artwork for the track features a painting of the national flower of Ukraine, the sunflower, by the Cuban artist, Yosan Leon. The cover of the single is a direct reference to the woman who was seen around the world giving sunflower seeds to Russian soldiers and telling them to carry them in their pockets so that when they die, sunflowers will grow. You can hear/buy the new song via PinkFloyd.lnk.to/HeyHeyRiseUp (http://PinkFloyd.lnk.to/HeyHeyRiseUp) from midnight tonight (12am on Friday, April 8th) in your location.

Another new song from guitarist Chester Kamen

Today we have some more new music from respected guitarist Chester Kamen. We know that a good number of you have been enjoying these songs. Amongst many other artists, Chester has toured with Roger Waters, joining his band in 2002 and playing on subsequent tours, and with David Gilmour on his 2016 Rattle That Lock tour. He first played with David back in 1985 during the Live Aid show – David and Chester were both part of Bryan Ferry’s band for that show (as was Jon Carin). Chester has, like many musicians, kept himself busy whilst lockdowns and restrictions due to Covid-19 have called a halt to many things – in particular, live performance. Last October, he shared his new piece of music called Take This, that runs for over 23 minutes. Chester told us that Take This is the first side of an album he is currently working on – following, or inspired by, the old Floyd blueprint of one long piece and several songs on the flip side. Since then we’ve seen the first songs on the second side of the album: Brand New Day, Swimming, I’d Love To Turn You, Lover’s Lane, Come The Revolution, Child Of The Damned, Stories, and The Wife Of The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. The new song from Chester is called Coat Of Many Colours, and takes a departure in style from some of the other recent songs. Chester told us that he’s “been busy rehearsing and gigging with my rock and roll band The Loves. This [new] song relates to the fall from grace, or maybe demise, of a hero or love once held in the highest esteem. It’s a little darker than some of the others… I couldn’t find a nun to sing the nun’s part so had to [use my wife Sarah] who did a great job. I played all the instruments though to be fair, there aren’t that many.” We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know from feedback we’ve had that the songs are proving very popular.

The new song from Chester is called The Wife of The Spy Who Came in From the Cold – quite a title! Chester told us: “I set myself a challenge to write a straight twelve bar blues without reference to blues tradition, in much the same way as Bob Dylan does. For me it was very interesting, I hope for others too. Lots of guitar on this one with great drums by Saleem Raman and breakneck bass by Jovan Radujko.” We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know from feedback we’ve had that the songs are proving very popular.

The new song from Chester – Stories – is now here, and as he notes on YouTube, the song is “Dedicated to the memory of my two beloved little brothers, Nick and Barry.” Chester tells us that it was recorded with his trio, The Twins, comprising himself, Dale Davis (Amy Winehouse’s bass player and Musical Director) and Hugo Degenhardt on drums and backing vocals. They also had a guest on piano: Barima Asante.
He also noted that “the basic track was recorded some time ago in Battersea on an eight track tape machine so it hopefully has that analog feel. The video has a cameo appearance from my old and dear friend Jon [Carin]” who you can spot toward the end of the song. We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know from feedback we’ve had that the songs are proving popular.

The new song from Chester – Child Of The Damned – has just arrived, with what reminds us of an early 1970s Floyd vibe to it. Chester noted that there’s “not such a band feel this time. Just me in isolation in Scarborough with a 16 track tape machine and some bananas for food…” We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know from feedback we’ve had that the songs are proving popular.

Chester Kamen – Come The Revolution

We recently told you about some more new music from respected guitarist Chester Kamen – for those of you who have been enjoying these songs (and there have been quite a number of you giving us positive feedback on these) some good news as the next song is now available. In October, he shared his recently finished new piece of music called Take This, that runs for over 23 minutes. Chester told us that Take This is the first side of an album he is currently working on – following, or inspired by, the old Floyd blueprint of one long piece and several songs on the flip side. Since then we’ve seen the first few songs on the second side of the album: Brand New Day, Swimming, I’d Love To Turn You, and Lover’s Lane. His new song – Come The Revolution – has just arrived, with Chester on fine, and mildly political form, with the song once again written and played by Chester with Chuck Sabo again joining him on drums. Oh, and “exhausted groan at the end”! We’ll update you as he progresses with the rest of the album, as we know from feedback we’ve had that a good number of you are enjoying the songs revealed so far!
