New book: Phil Manzanera memoir (with PF/David Gilmour coverage) being published

The incredible musician, songwriter and record producer Phil Manzanera has now announced his memoir, Revolucion to Roxy. The book features over 100 black white, and colour, photographs looking at his times and adventures with not only Roxy Music but Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, Heroes del Silencio, and much more. There’s apparently a lot to interest Floyd fans in the book, with a chapter devoted to ‘The Gilmour Years’. Manzanera met Gilmour when Phil was still at Dulwich College. Phil’s brother Eugen was at Cambridge University and met David at gigs. Much later, Manzanera co-produced Gilmour’s 2006 album On an Island, and played in Gilmour’s band for tours in Europe and North America. Manzanera also co-wrote One Slip from 1987’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, played on the Rattle That Lock album, and helped bring together the pieces of music which eventually became Pink Floyd’s final album, The Endless River, which he was also co-producer for. Phil: “I’ve written this memoir for my English and Colombian family, dear friends and music fans, who have followed my musical twists and turns for over half a century. We all have different memories of the same events, and these stories are my stories. It’s a memoir that spans my 50’s childhood in Cuba, Hawaii and Venezuela, when everything seemed in the brightest technicolor, to grey but very cool ’60’s London and the start of a music career that continues to enrich my life, some 50 years later. Roxy Music is an important part of the story and I will be forever thankful to the doors it opened for me to a global world of music and musical collaborations. But I hope you’ll find my family history every bit as fascinating as my music adventures, I’m proud to be related to a Colombian pirate, a spy and and an Italian opera musician.” The book is available in a variety of editions; there’s a signed special limited edition book in a clamshell case with a 10 track CD including five unreleased tracks, a Bug Eyes sleep mask, and a Gibson Guitars Firebird V11 guitar badge. This can be ordered from AwayWithMedia.com (https://www.awaywithmedia.com/buy-books/phil-manzanera) for delivery in January 2024. Danish celebration for Roger Waters’ 80th birthday

Roger Waters will be turning 80 on September 6th. Still incredibly active, Waters has a huge number of fans and advocates in Denmark. Three of them are performing on Waters’ birthday to celebrate his words, music and activism on a night that combines a one-hour lecture with a 90-minute-long acoustic concert. Thomas Ulrik Larsen, esteemed songwriter, musician, journalist and lecturer, and friend of Brain Damage, opens the program with a talk about Roger Waters’ background, the Pink Floyd years, solo career and Waters’ current standing in today’s musical and political climate. After the lecture Thomas Ulrik Larsen (on vocals and guitar) will be joined by multi-instrumentalist Anders Haarh and singer/pianist Stine Liebman. The trio goes by the name Shrink Freud and plays acoustic interpretations of Roger Waters’ best songs from his Floyd years as well as from his solo albums – both classics and rarities. The venue is Kulturium, which is just south of Copenhagen, and the admission fee is a modest 80 Danish kroner (the equivalent of eight British Pounds). You can get your tickets for the birthday bash at Kulturium.dk (https://kulturium.dk/kalender/event/show/fdselsdagsforedrag-om-pink-floyd.html).

Familiar voice heard on Floyd inspired new music

Bjorn Riis, a long time friend of Brain Damage, and the guy who runs the excellent Gilmourish.com (https://www.gilmourish.com) website, which focuses on David Gilmour’s sound and equipment, is an accomplished musician in his own right, and at the end of next month, releases a four track EP, A Fleeting Glimpse, which includes a familiar sounding vocalist. His new new single, Dark Shadows (part 1), features long-time Pink Floyd backing vocalist Durga McBroom on vocals; the track will appear on the EP, which will be released on September 30th. He told us: “My goal has been to write original material and trying to capture an authentic Floyd vibe without actually copying or doing covers. I’m performing lead vocals and guitars.” Riis is a founding member of the highly successful Norwegian progressive rock band
Airbag. With his new EP, he said: “This is a work of passion. It’s a chance for me to go back to my musical roots and pay a respectful homage. All four songs could easily have fitted on one of my albums but there is a seamless Pink Floyd vibe in all of them.” The new music is said to capture the essence of Pink Floyd, from the mellow psychedelic soundscapes of the early 70s to the bombastic stadium rock of the 80s and 90s. “I wanted to make it sound authentic, using gear and sounds that Pink Floyd would employ on a
certain song or album. It really took me back to when I started to play guitar and experiment with
tone and sounds.” Apart from Durga McBroom, other guest appearances feature Arild Brøter, from Norwegian prog band Pymlico, on drums and Per Øydir on Farfisa organ. If the taster, below, tempts you, you can order A Fleeting Glimpse at KarismaRecords.no (https://www.karismarecords.no/artists/bjorn-riis/).
