Hipgnosis Exhibition opens in Germany

A recently opened exhibition of Hipgnosis pictures and artwork in Germany has been attracting a lot of interest from visitors, along with local media. Co-curator Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell was in touch with us, to provide some more detail on this for you all. Po said: “The Hipgnosis Exhibition ‘Breathe’ opened on Sunday 21st January to an enthusiastic crowd of 400 people. The exhibition runs over 3 floors of this wonderful gallery and contains 150 Hipgnosis pictures, curated by myself and John Colton of the Browse Gallery, Berlin. There has been great press and TV coverage. “The initial rooms celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon and all the artwork that has been designed by Hipgnosis or Storm Studios over the past fifty years related to that celebrated album. The Ludwig Schloss Gallery is in Oberhausen, 30 minutes by car from the centre of Dusseldorf. Germany has always been a huge admirer of Pink Floyd, and Hipgnosis, and this marks the sixth exhibition held over the last five years in that country, with many thanks to the continued support from Pink Floyd.” For more information on the gallery, and the exhibition – which runs until May 2024 – please visit Ludwiggalerie.de (https://www.ludwiggalerie.de/en/exhibition/current-exhibitions/). Our thanks to Po for the update, as well!

Richard Wright ‘Wet Dream’ reissue with Steven Wilson remix release details

Some great news has been announced this afternoon, following some online rumours and speculation – Richard Wright’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, is to be reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978 – this time in deep blue transparent marbled vinyl. It will also be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, on CD and on blu-ray which includes a 5.1 mix and never before released personal images and videos from around this period of his life. To be released on July 28th – the date that would have been his 80th birthday – it will initially be made available on CD and all streaming platforms, with the vinyl and blu-ray editions of the record being released on September 29th. Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record, it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. When originally released, post Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) and shortly before 1979’s The Wall, Wet Dream was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson’s mix is designed to give new life to the record demonstrating Wright’s brilliance. Richard wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums he released outside of Pink Floyd, the others being Broken China, from 1996, and Identity, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal videos along with a photo gallery. It’s housed in a book format with collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Here’s a first taste of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:

Aubrey Powell: Through the Prism – talk & book signing

Apologies for the lack of advance notice, but we’ve just found out this morning, that this evening – Thursday, May 19th – at 6:30pm, Hipgnosis co-founder, creative designer, photographer and filmmaker Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell talks about his recently published book Through the Prism, published by Thames & Hudson, in the Cafe of The Photographer’s Gallery in London (https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/aubrey-powell-through-prism-talk-book-signing) which is close to Oxford Circus tube station. The event is free to attend. In the talk, Powell will share intriguing stories of creative endeavour, volatile relationships, excessive lifestyles and bizarre events from the world of rock in conversation with author and music journalist Mark Blake. The gallery preview the event by saying: “Hipgnosis transformed album art with their designs for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Paul McCartney and Wings and so many more. Brutally honest, entertaining and insightful, Po tells the incredible stories of creative endeavour, volatile alliances, high-risk/high-altitude photoshoots and downright bizarre events from the halcyon days of rock’n’roll. From his unique insider perspective, Po sets many records straight, bringing revelatory new details to legendary tales, including the genesis of The Dark Side Of The Moon, Houses Of The Holy, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, and Peter Gabriel’s trio ‘Car’ / ‘Scratch’ / ‘Melt’, each evidenced with photographs, documents, artefacts and artworks from Po’s own archive. “Mark Blake’s work has been published in Mojo, The Times, Rolling Stone and Classic Rock. His books include the best-selling ‘Pigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of Pink Floyd’ and ‘Bring It On Home’, a critically-acclaimed biography of Led Zeppelin’s notorious manager, Peter Grant.” For more information about the event, and getting to the gallery, please visit ThePhotographersGallery.org.uk (https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/aubrey-powell-through-prism-talk-book-signing). New Pink Floyd print series launches

One of the ever present areas of interest for Pink Floyd collectors are posters. Whilst originals are the most desired, and highly sought after, reproductions and newly created works marking past concerts often prove a more affordable way for fans to brighten dull walls. To tap into this desire, a recently opened gallery, Echo (https://www.EchoPrintGallery.com), are now offering a range of officially licensed, limited edition posters representing different artists, including Pink Floyd. They have just launched the first of their Floyd posters, a print by artist WolfSkullJack commemorating Pink Floyd’s performance from October 13, 1973 in Vienna, Austria which is now available to buy in three variants. The artist said: “My father introduced me to Pink Floyd when I was but a wee pup and Dark Side of the Moon was a regular on the record player. I am eternally thankful to have inherited his excellent music taste! When working for musicians I love to put on their music as I sketch and ink in an attempt to capture the bands essence and I think that shines through here. “The art is heavily influenced by Time and Breathe, two of my favourites, with reference to the lyrics, ‘Run, rabbit run’ in Breathe. Wolves in my work are often ethereal/celestial creatures who represent time and space. The wolf is representative as part of the natural life cycle of the rabbit in an all natural way rather than something sinister.” Should you be interested in these prints, or subsequent ones they offer (including a 2021 Subscription scheme) visit EchoPrintGallery.com (https://www.EchoPrintGallery.com) for more information.
