Pink Floyd The Wall poster in #ILoveLive3 fundraiser
In its 25th year, Stagehand, the original live event production workers charity, is running the third of its Christmas fundraisers, #ILoveLive3. This year’s campaign recognises the immense challenges faced by the live event production industry and aims to provide crucial support to UK-based touring and festival crews dealing with serious physical or mental ill health. As ever, the fundraiser includes items from big names in music, from signed set lists to drum skins. Jonathan Higgs, frontman of art rock band Everything Everything, emphasised the crucial role crew members play in touring activities, stating, “Our crew are a vital part of our touring activities; we couldn’t do it without them. I’d encourage all live music fans to get involved and give back to the people behind the scenes.” Lighting Designer Tom Campbell of MIRRAD, who has worked with an array of high-profile bands, said that “research has found that touring professionals are 5-10 times more likely than the general population to experience mental health challenges, facing industry-specific challenges such as irregular sleep patterns, performance pressures, and demanding travel schedules: all of which contribute to the vulnerability of touring personnel to serious mental health issues.” #ILoveLive3 runs through Crowdfunder with tickets priced at £5 to remain accessible to all music fans. The prize draw is scheduled for Friday, January 5th 2024, when winners will be announced. Entries will close on Friday, December 22nd. The Pink Floyd poster in this prize draw is an original The Wall poster that was designed by cartoonist and illustrator Gerald Scarfe for the release of the band’s iconic 1979 album of the same name. Since 1979, the poster has been the personal property of the band’s one-time live sound engineer Bryan Grant, who has now kindly donated it to the Stagehand fundraiser. Bryan was the Managing Director of the legendary company, Britannia Row Productions, the live sound rental business which was founded by Pink Floyd. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets 2023 Echoes Tour starts tonight!
Well, the day is now here! Tonight, in Loreley, Germany, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets start their 2023 Echoes Tour. They will be taking in a number of European countries this month (July) – Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and no less than six shows in Italy, including a return for Nick to the ancient ruins of Pompeii for a concert to be held in the Teatro Grande (after he receives an honorary citizenship from the mayor of Pompei on the day of the concert – the same honour that David Gilmour received back in July 2016 when he played in the ruins located in the city). Then, in September, they will be playing six shows in Australia. As those of you who were fortunate enough to have seen the band on their quite extensive 2022 Echoes Tour, which took in shows in the UK, Europe, the US and Canada, presenting another incredible set list and upgraded staging to thrilled audiences across the board. One of many highlights of the set was of course the piece that the tour is named after – Echoes – each night a tour de force which is sure to be replicated again this year. New Syd Barrett limited heavyweight vinyl LP collection available to order
Some very interesting news today from Third Man Records, who have quite a reputation for quality, limited pressing. They’ve teamed up with Sony Music Entertainment for a very special, limited edition box set that many of you will undoubtably be interested in! Individually out of print on LP for almost ten years (the last issue of these was in 2014) and never previously available together on vinyl, Third Man are releasing Syd Barrettâs solo albums – The Madcap Laughs, Barrett, and Opel – as the 57th installment of their Vault subscription series. This reissue sees January 1970’s The Madcap Laughs pressed on ‘Golden Hair’ coloured vinyl, November 1970’s Barrett on ‘Baby Lemonade’ coloured vinyl, and 1988’s Opel on ‘Milky Way Opal’ coloured vinyl. All three LPs are pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit and will come housed in a newly-designed slipcase featuring a recursive portrait of Syd by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Greg Ruth, executed in one continuous line without lifting the pen. An added bonus to this collection is a 7-inch single by David Gilmour covering two Barrett compositions. Dominoes was recorded live at London’s Royal Festival Hall in January 2002, and Dark Globe was recorded live in Clam, Austria, as a tribute, shortly after Syd’s death in July 2006. It’s good news for those who enjoyed seeing the band at the 2019 Night Of The Prog Festival at Loreley, in St Goarshausen, Germany – and those who enjoy the festival generally. The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary – exclusive Japanese SACD & loads of extras
As you all know, the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon is next month, with a deluxe box set, the Live At Wembley 1974 LP and CD sets, and the official book (which we’ve seen and is very nice) that’s included in the box set, and available separately too, all being released on March 24th. Exclusively, though, for the Japanese market (but thanks to HMV.co.jp (https://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Pink-Floyd_000000000004473/item_The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-Hybrid-Multi-Ch-Edition_13590862) and CDJapan (https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/SICP-10143), available worldwide online) is a hybrid SACD (Super Audio CD) version of the album, bundled with loads of reproduction memorabilia – as seen to the right! For those unfamiliar with hybrid SACDs, they hold higher resolution audio, often with surround sound versions as well as standard stereo, and the stereo version is playable on all normal CD/DVD/Blu-ray players. To play the multi-channel audio, you need a compatible player, but as the format was devised by Sony and Philips, there are plenty of those around still. The surround and stereo versions of TDSOTM on this SACD is as released in 2021 on the SACD from Analogue Productions SACD. The album is packaged in typical Japanese style – a 7″ version of the original album cover, along with the stickers and posters you would hope to be included in this reproduction.
