Sir Clive Woodward’s radical plan to reboot rugby

It’s game over for the 2020 Six Nations, Gallagher Premiership, Pro 14, Top 14 and two European competitions, so now’s the time to give rugby a reboot according to Sir Clive Woodward.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, the World Cup-winning coach said: “We have been crying out for decisive and early calls, some leadership. Alas, nobody stepped into that vacuum.

“It’s all over: the 2020 Six Nations, the Gallagher Premiership, the Pro 14, the Top 14 and the two European competitions.

“There is no mileage in banging our heads against a brick wall on this. It will make life much easier going forward if we quit on this season altogether. We have to concentrate on 2020-21 now.

“Some are holding out for the remaining Six Nations matches to be played in October but can we be sure that is even logistically possible? Nobody can guarantee that. And even if they could, the competition would be skewed.”

He adds when rugby does return, “we need a fresh start”.

EDITORS PICKS:

“Rugby has been way too cantankerous, knee-jerk and muddled recently. The feel-good factor of the World Cup has vanished. It had become a worrying time even before the emergence of coronavirus.

“The game I knew as a player and coach for more than half a century is in danger of losing its soul a little.”
