Review: Poppy Radiates Pure Mystique in The Last Disagreement Livestream Show

If you are not familiar with Poppy, let’s quickly get you acquainted: a sweet, fiery, mysterious, confident, fem power, imaginatively reinventive, adaptable musician, artist and author. Poppy just debuted her highly anticipated The Last Disagreement livestream concert via Veeps. The fifteen song set is expected to be the closing chapter of her I Disagree era. Fans have been eager to devour a slice of their favorite alt queen after a long awaited pause due to the Covid-19 pandemic that forced her to indefinitely postpone the European leg of her I Disagree Tour.

For those who attended the I Disagree Tour, there is an earthquake of nostalgia to be felt. (For me, the Los Angeles date of this tour was the last show I attended before the pandemic slashed live music as we knew it.) With vibrant lighting and stage setup uniform to the tour, Poppy’s performance is just as reflective aesthetically now as it was then. She is bubbly, yet assertive – alluring us with every second that passes. Her vocals seamlessly align with the live instrumentals. Poppy’s full touring band accompanies her throughout the stream: Ralph Alexander (drums), Nicolas Perez (guitar), Ted Gowans (keyboard), and Matt McJunkins (bass). For viewers who were unable to catch the tour in person, I can confidently assure you that your past FOMO horrors will vanish once tuning into The Last Disagreement.

The whirring siren signals the introduction of “Concrete” as the show’s opener and fuels excitement immediately. The chatroom feed erupts with nothing but pure thrill and immense support from her fans worldwide. Poppy carries us effortlessly through a roller coaster set with both heavy and mellow tracks from I Disagree, along with “Scary Mask” from her EP, Choke. Also included in the performance are a few songs from her album Am I a Girl? and a cover of t.A.T.u.’s “All The Things She Said” that opens up a box of teenage feels which mesh generously with the modern day cross-genre tuneful getaway that is precisely Poppy.

As if the show didn’t submerge us enough into a cloud of concert deja vu, exclusive event merchandise was initially available to purchase in specific ticket bundles prior to the show. Missed the stream? Don’t fret, you can still virtually race to the merch table via the side tab in the livestream’s chat and “pick up” a t-shirt or a hoodie, which will conveniently ship to your house within the coming weeks. Fortunately, ticket sales (via Veeps) to replay the show have been extended until Tuesday, April 27th by 1PM PT, while the show remains available on demand to rewatch for those who already tuned into the original livestream.
