A reminder, should you need it – today is Black Friday Record Store Day, and for those in the UK, retailers have in the last few minutes put all the special releases for this event available to purchase online! Included in this special RSD for Black Friday (the final Friday in November), is a 7″ vinyl release from Sony Legacy of “Yes, I Have Ghosts”, the first new song from David Gilmour in five years which features his daughter Romany on harp and vocals. The inspiration for the track was Polly Samson’s novel A Theatre for Dreamers, a Sunday Times bestseller about an idyllic poet/musician/artist community in 1960s Greece. An alternate version of the song is on the B-side. As with the other RSD 2020 releases, it is a limited edition: generally the RSD releases are pressed up as just a couple of thousand or so worldwide. We understand that there are 5,000 of David’s single available to snap up from today. Some of you may also be interested in the 12″ single of The Green Manalishi, recorded at the Mick Fleetwood and Friends celebration of Peter Green, which David appeared at (although doesn’t appear on this particular song). And, as we’ve mentioned previously, go to RecordStoreDay.com (https://www.recordstoreday.com) for more details of participating stores near you. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores selling these releases; first come, first served, and only one copy per customer.

Nick Mason announced as the 2019 “Prog God”!
Nick Mason is to be awarded the accolade of Prog God, honouring more than 50 years’ service to the world of progressive music, at the 2019 Progressive Music Awards. He’ll receive the award at a star-studded ceremony on September 12th at London’s Underglobe Theatre. Previous recipients of the title include Steve Howe, Carl Palmer, Jon Anderson and Peter Gabriel. Nick told Prog magazine, who are behind the award ceremony: I’m all in favour of recognition for drummers – particularly when it’s me – so I’m really delighted to be recognised as Prog God. It’s hard to believe that it was over 50 years ago that the music we know as prog rock was born, and it’s still being celebrated, played and developed in the 21st century. Long may it continue! Last year, he announced his new live project, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, who have been nominated in the Event Of The Year category of the awards, the winner of which will be revealed on the night. At the time, he told Prog: I’d been ruminating on playing again rather than just talking about the old days, which I’ve done rather a lot of. It seemed like a good idea and it sounded as though we could actually find enough people committed to doing it. I think once we actually got some instruments and played together, I thought, ‘Oh yeah, this is fun and it could work!’ Nick has previously confirmed he has no plans to head to the studio with any of the material. [These songs have] been recorded perfectly well by Pink Floyd some years ago. I think the fun of it is to try to be true to the music but actually not slavishly copy every detail of it. What I like is the idea of playing live and I’m really enjoying [revisiting the old material]. There are enough tribute bands to cover most of it, but this is very much a labour of love for me. The full list of winners from the Progressive Music Awards 2019 will be printed in Prog’s special souvenir issue, which goes on sale from October 25th – more details of that, and the results of the award ceremony, when we have them. On the night, you can follow what is happening via the Prog website (https://www.loudersound.com/prog).

Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd film premieres
Last night, a packed Everyman Kings Cross cinema in London witnessed the first screening of Have You Got It Yet? The Story of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. An event mainly for family, friends and those involved with the film in some way, the guest list stretched so far that they had to devote both auditoriums to the screening! It felt like a bit of a “who’s who” of Syd’s world were there to witness an absolutely superb documentary about the life of Barrett, from his very early days through to the genesis of Pink Floyd, his solo career after, and then on to a quiet life in Cambridge back as Roger, with the Syd persona left behind in London. A straw poll after showed that the film gave an excellent insight into Barrett, his life and career, for those who were novices AND those who had followed Barrett’s life for many years. There was some incredible footage, and photographs, which had never been shown before, ranging from early Floyd gigs to pictures of Barrett at Abbey Road Studios during the recording of the Wish You Were Here album. The film is at turns funny, touching, revelatory, absorbing and also there’s sections which are sad. At times, there’s opportunities to dispel certain myths about the man, and to give more background to Barrett the man. It’s a film that has been in the works for many years, with Storm Thorgerson working alongside Roddy Bogawa on it in his final few years, and it does seem to form a tribute to Thorgerson as well, with his presence felt through the film, not least from pithy off-screen comments. Typical Storm! The film will be screened at Everyman Cinemas in the UK from May 15th, with the US Canada getting their opportunity from June. SydBarrettFilm.com (https://www.SydBarrettFilm.com) is the place to check out for the latest information on the film, its screenings, and hopefully a later home release either on streaming or physical media. It really is a film that deserves your efforts in getting to a participating screen. The intro by Bogawa that took place in the bar before the film, was filmed by Marcelo Paulo de Souza for our friends at Pink Floyd Collectors and here it is – it gives a flavour of the breadth of previously unseen material in the film, and some background to the making of it.
