Reason hinted why Man Utd rejected expensive flop’s January exit

Man Utd rejected a loan approach from a club outside the Premier League for a rarely-seen recent recruit, claims a report.

Man Utd are currently challenging on three fronts as they seek to cap off a resurgent season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

The Norwegian has the club fighting for silverware in the FA Cup and Europa League. Furthermore, work must still be done to secure a top four finish.

With fixtures set to come thick and fast, the depth of Solskjaer’s squad is set to be tested.

One player who has played a bit-part role in the campaign thus far is Donny van De Beek.

The Dutchman arrived from Ajax for an initial £35m in the summer in a deal that was initially met with excitement.

Van de Beek has been limited to just 311 minutes of league action, however, with doubts emerging over the viability of fitting him into the same starting eleven as Bruno Fernandes at the same time.

But despite his relative lack of gametime, a recent report by the Daily Express has revealed Man Utd blocked an ‘undisclosed offer’ for his services in January.

The outlet (who cite transfer guru Fabrizio Romano) note that the deal would’ve seen him depart on loan until the season’s conclusion.

Man Utd rejected this offer. The report indicates the club’s presence in three competitions may see him once again come to the fore.

The midfielder has played a far bigger role in cup competitions this season, starting games in each of the EFL and FA Cups along with the Champions League.

Scholes declares why Fernandes isn’t POTY

Meanwhile, Bruno Fernandes does not deserve to win the PFA Player of the Year award, according to former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes.

Fernandes’ arrival at Old Trafford in January 2020 has been a major factor in their resurgence. The attacking midfielder hit the ground running in the Premier League and already has 34 goals and 21 assists to his name from 61 United appearances.

Thanks in part to Fernandes, United were even in title contention as far into the season as January. However, rivals Man City now seem destined to win the league instead.

Even so, Fernandes has had a major impact this season, with 15 goals and 11 assists in the Premier League so far. Only Mohamed Salah has scored more goals than him to date, while Kevin De Bruyne and Harry Kane are the only Premier League players with more assists this term.

However, United legend Scholes – who recently criticised Fernandes’ performance in big games such as United’s recent draw with Chelsea – has played down talk that the Portugal international should be named the Player of the Year.
