Pundit questions ‘strange’ Man Utd decision which is now going to start a conflict

A pundit has questioned Manchester United’s decision to sign Jadon Sancho in the summer, describing the transfer as “strange”.

Sancho was a long-term target for those in the boardroom at Old Trafford. And they finally got their man with a £73m fee paid to Borussia Dortmund. The winger undoubtedly holds bags of talent and potential, and at just 21 years old, has so much more to come.

It’s been a tough start to life at United for the England international, though. He’s failed to register a goal or an assist in his first 10 appearances for the club.

That’s a far cry from his record in Germany. In 137 games he scored 50 times and assisted a further 64 goals.

Now former Leeds player Noel Whelan is suggesting the Red Devils were unwise to sign Sancho with the talent they already had at their disposal.

“It’s strange that they even went for Sancho,” he told Football Insider. “With Rashford and Greenwood already at the club, did they really need him?

“There’s no doubt that he’s very talented but there’s now a huge array of wide players at Man United and something’s got to give.

“With Rashford coming back, you have to say that Sancho is down the pecking order.

“He’s not hit the heights of what we expected. He will become a fantastic player, but he’s not had a quick enough impact at Old Trafford.

“Rashford won’t give up easy, Greenwood will persevere – the two of them got on the scoresheet at the weekend. There’s going to be a big battle ahead for minutes in those wide areas.”

The returning Rashford replaced Sancho, who had started the match, in the 65th minute against Leicester at the weekend.

Sancho’s minutes have already been limited and he’s been in and out of the team, but with his countryman now back, he could have even less opportunities.

Solskjaer given little chance of seeing out the season at Manchester United

Double United swoop touted

Meanwhile, United could benefit from the arrival of an Italian manager and Inter Milan star, according to reports in Europe.

Norwegian boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has come under fire in the past few weeks. The recent disappointing results have seen them slip down the Premier League table.

Title rivals Chelsea already have five points on them prior to match day nine. And gossip columns in both the UK and in Europe are analysing the future of Solskjaer.

Some reckon that he won’t be in charge after Man Utd’s tough run of fixtures against the likes of Atalanta, Liverpool and Tottenham. And one former Prem manager is favourite to take over…
