PSG ‘bemused’ as Pochettino situation takes fresh twist amid Tottenham return talk

Mauricio Pochettino has seen his contract with Paris Saint-Germain automatically extended in a blow to Tottenham’s hopes of luring him back.

Tottenham are on the lookout for a permanent successor to Jose Mourinho. Intriguinly, there had been talk that they could turn back to his predecessor. Pochettino previously enjoyed five years in north London before being sacked in 2019. However, it was a decision Daniel Levy came to regret and he has been trying to get him back.

The major obstacle is that Pochettino only joined PSG earlier this year and was under contract for another season.

Rumours emerged from Liberation late on Tuesday that the Argentine had taken matters into his own hands by telling PSG he wanted to leave. Those claims were backed up by various sources such as Football London. A return to Tottenham was well in his sights.

But there has been a fresh twist, as The Telegraph report that PSG have extended Pochettino’s contract for another year. He is now committed until 2023.

What’s more, it is claimed that he never told them he wanted to leave. They are “bemused” by those claims and are convinced he is “committed”, having not been told otherwise.

While Spurs were exploring their options, Pochettino never had contact with PSG over a potential departure. Now, it seems they have put the final nail in the coffin of Tottenham’s hopes of luring him back.

Levy will have to look elsewhere for the right appointment.

Pochettino accused of ulterior motives

Before these updates, Pochettino was accused of leading Tottenham on in a bid to earn more power at PSG.

Simon Jordan told talkSPORT:“I think there’s a power play going on.”

“I think Pochettino is using Tottenham as a stalking horse to perhaps insert greater influence into what is reputed to be quite a difficult environment to work in – PSG’s chain of communication, the line of command, the lack of access to the ultimate controlling influence which is the money, and historically the relationship that managers have with Leonardo.

“I realise that we may be seeing a more measured and balanced Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea as a result of experiences. But if you roll back six or seven months he was at odds with the PSG hierarchy and at odds with Leonardo. So it doesn’t surprise you that there may be challenges in the way they interact with one another.

“I still find it difficult to comprehend the notion that Pochettino will come back to Tottenham, and why either party would really, really want that.”
