Premiere: Sleep Nation Release Out-Of-This-World Music Video for “Headlights”

Space exploration seems to be a pretty popular topic in the age of corona. After all, doesn’t everyone wish they could just blast off into the cosmos and get away from all the problems of the world right now? It’s no wonder that artists as big as Lady Gaga and Nick Jonas have put on space-inspired performances in recent months.

With the release of the music video for their newest single “Headlights,” Sleep Nation has become the latest act to incorporate an interstellar theme into their work. The Nashville-based rockers are by no means just chasing the trends though: the outer space setting brings new meaning to “Headlights,” a powerful ballad about love and loss inspired by the 1961 Wayne Cochran classic, “Last Kiss.” The astral backdrop complements the tragic story of two star-crossed lovers perfectly. It’s only fitting for such a stellar single to be set to an absolutely astronomical video!

As soon as you hit play, the vintage green-on-black text begins spilling out across the screen, dubbing the objective of mission “Headlights” to be simply to “orbit Earth.” With the addition of some binary code and a reference to the Space Force, the stage has been set for project SLPNTN’s voyage through the galaxy. A countdown gives way to reveal Sleep Nation and two additional crew members inside what appears to be a Jeep fashioned into some sort of lunar rover. If it weren’t for the spacesuits and starry sky behind them, you could easily mistake this mission for nothing more than a group of friends jamming out to the radio on a road trip.

Throughout the rest of the video, we see members Bran Merritt, Joey Lauretta, and their two co-stars double as mission control agents. Donning dress shirts, shades, and headsets, they appear in a variety of locations, including an air traffic control tower, a monitor room, and a UFO hangar. The video flips between shots of these operatives and the astronauts hard at work and grainy footage of a bassist and guitarist floating about, weightless.

At the climax, we find frontman Bran looking particularly troubled in the driver’s seat of the spacecraft. Those back at mission control mouth the line “you left without saying goodbye” as they lose contact with the spacemen. The lead singer fixates on the rearview mirror, suddenly stricken by a memory from his past. In the ensuing flashback, we see him sharing a kiss with his lover, only to be interrupted by what we can only assume was the accident alluded to in the lyrics. Remembering this tragic incident moves Bran to action. He quickly climbs out of the vehicle to fix a burnt-out headlight. The aptly named “Out of Control Rock ‘N’ Roll Duo” and their fellow space travelers brace for a bumpy ride. After a flash of light, the video fades to black. The onscreen readout indicates two crewmembers were lost. What became of Bran and Joey? Smart enough to keep the audience wanting more, Sleep Nation leaves that mystery unsolved. Fans will just have to wait and see what the alt rockers’ next release has in store! If this music video is any indication, it’s sure to be out of this world.
