Who: Vince Staples – Smile, You’re on Camera

Where: Roseland Theater Portland, Oregon

When: March 23, 2019

Soon after Vince Staples announced his “Smile, You’re on Camera” tour and tickets went on sale, his Portland, Oregon date sold out almost immediately and a second date was added. The crowd that welcomed Staples on the first night had exactly the energy expected and Staples needed. They were a crowd so immersed and so overjoyed, and a crowd that did not stop moving and shouting the lyrics back at Vince Staples. They were a crowd fully in the moment throughout the entire night.

Appropriately titled the “Smile, You’re on Camera” tour Vince Staples makes the audience feel just as important and a center point of the show. Behind Staples was a large LED screen, and instead of displaying visuals to accompany his songs the cameras were pointed at the audience and thrown up onto the screen. A live video feed went around the venue showing the jumping and smiling audience that packed the room. At points in the show the feed was momentarily suspended and the screen was black, lights highlighted Vince Staples to make him the focus of the show during several performances.

Staples fit as much of his catalog into his set as he could, compiling various songs and hits from each of his albums Summertime ’06, Big Fish Theory and FM!. Wasting no time, Staples opened the show with “Feels Like Summer” to hype up and engage his crowd from the start. A few other songs include “War Ready,” “Tweakin’,” “BagBak,” “Norf Norf” and “Run the Bands.”

The most powerful and touching part of the show came at the end, something Vince Staples has been doing throughout this tour – taking a moment to pay his respects to and thank his friend Mac Miller, and playing Miller’s complete Tiny Desk Concert on the giant screen. It’s been an intimate moment for everyone across the country to share with Vince Staples and remember Mac Miller, and even more touching to see the number of people staying after the show each night to pay their respects and watch the performance.
