Who: Toro y Moi

Where: Majestic Theatre, Detroit, Michigan

When: November 2, 2019

Do you like Chillwave? Then say Thank You to Chaz Bear, aka Toro y Moi, for bringing the genre to the masses for the last decaed. Since then his beats have been giving us something to sit back, relax, and chill too but the music has also evolved to incorporate more of Chaz’ hip-hop side. It’s funky, it’s quirky, it’s weird, and it is distinctly Toro. Having released Outer Peace in January of this year and just days off the heels of the release of Soul Trash, there was plenty to bring to the stage in front of a SOLD OUT crowd at Detroit’s Majestic Theatre.

The night started with “3-28-18B,” the first track off the previously mentioned Soul Trash. It starts to set the mood with its rhythmic guitar twangs and perfectly played reverb that made it feel like the stage was coming to life with the fog rolling in and the lights giving way to the group’s silhouettes. The incense on stage was a nice addition to set the mood too.

A few tracks into what would be a 21 song set Toro drops “Ordinary Pleasure,” one of the singles off Outer Peace. It’s a fun and funky, loaded with sweet synths. The crowd loved it, singing along the chorus and trying to hit some of the higher notes made for a scene you couldn’t help but have a laugh at. The good vibes and absolutely spectacularly good feeling in the venue continued throughout the night with Chaz playing “New Beat” towards the end of the set, it’s a track of 2011’s Underneath the Pine, and one that earned the group bit of notoriety.

Toro y Moi closed out the evening with “Freelance,” yet another funky dance beat that makes you forgot the show is coming to an end because you just want to keep on dancing! Eventually though, the disco type beat begins to slow you realize just what an epic performance you’ve just witnessed. Chaz and has an incredibly diverse catalog of music, yet, his sound is continuing to evolve. From Lo-Fi to Hi-Fi, chillwave to hip-hop, there was a mix of it all, but that’s exactly what you would expect from a musician as talented as Toro y Moi.
