Official: Barcelona forced to agree new contract with fringe player in order to register Ferran Torres

Barcelona have Ferran Torres conundrum

Manchester City and Spain winger Ferran Torres became the first move of the January transfer window as he completed the switch from Manchester to Barcelona a fortnight ago.

The 21-year-old joined the Catalan giants in a deal worth up to £54.7m, and signed a contract with them until 2027.

However, there was a problem. The club’s wage bill meant that they could not register the Spaniard due to being over their wage cap. And while the departure of Philippe Coutinho on loan to Aston Villa helped matters, it did not solve them.

But now, it appears they have reached a solution.

Umtiti gets new deal

Now, in a move that perhaps will do more harm than good in the long term, Barcelona have agreed a new long term deal with Samuel Umtiti, that will see the Frenchman stay at the club until 2026.

The caveat? He will do so on less money than his current deal, which expires in 2023, was worth per year, having agreed to reduce “a part of the salary that he was due to receive in the year and a half remaining on his contract”.

And with this, Barcelona are able to register Ferran Torres, who could make his debut next weekend.

The question is, will tying an injury-prone 28 year old to the club for an additional three years come back to bite the Blaugrana?
