The latest issue (cover date May 2020, issue 276) of the UK's respected music magazine Uncut, arrives in stores later this week, and has a fascinating article in it that is well worth tracking down.George Harrison is on the cover of the new issue of Uncut, and they celebrate George's greatest achievements, aided by the recollections of his closest collaborators. Elsewhere in the issue, there's Brian and Roger Eno, Lucinda Williams, Michael Kiwanuka, David Roback and Andrew Weatherall RIP; a look at Eric Clapton's all-star Ginger Baker tribute, Shirley Collins, Mark Lanegan, Suzanne Vega, Thundercat, Wilco and more. There's also a cover-mounted 15-track CD showcasing the month's best new music.Of principal interest to Floyd fans though will be the six-page look at Syd Barrett, through the words of none other than Nick Mason, with additional contributions from Roger Waters, and Aubrey 'Po' Powell (Pink Floyd's Creative Director). Nick takes the reader from his first encounter with Syd, through the early days of the band, to when it all started to go wrong, and Syd and the Floyd parted ways. Nick's recollections are typically candid, and gives good insight into his view on events. This magazine will be published on Thursday (March 19th 2020), and is due to appear in good UK stores that day, and despatched from this date for online orders. [UPDATED] David Gilmour Guitar Auction – today’s the day!
Good morning! It’s the day that many Pink Floyd fans have been waiting for – today, at 10am EST (3pm UK/BST) at Christie’s in New York City, over 120 of David Gilmour’s guitars are up for auction, raising money for charity (more about that shortly). These range from his most iconic and best known instruments, through to ones that he has accumulated over the years and have less sparkling CVs. The day, the event, seems to have polarised a significant amount of the Pink Floyd community. There’s those who are excited, and have mentally committed a certain amount of money so they can place a few bids, with the hopes of getting their hands on one of David’s instruments, whatever it might be. There are also those who are sad (some, desperately) about his selling of the bulk of his collection. Those people should rest assured – he stated recently that he was keeping at least 20 guitars, including a replica Black Strat that is seemingly incredibly close in sound and feel to the original. In a recent fan Q A, he said: Don’t fret too much. I still have a few lovely guitars that I couldn’t let go. A 1945 Martin D18, my Fender Esquire nicknamed The Workmate and a Black Gretsch Duo-Jet to name but three. On being asked what it is about the Workmate that led to him keeping it over 0001 and the Black Strat, he responded: I’m just too fond of the Workmate. He has also made it clear that he isn’t finishing with the creation and performance of music ( No, no. It does not mean retirement ), and on being asked Have you retained sufficient guitars to make another album, and play more live shows? Do you have any such plans? he gave a simple Yes and yes . Great news for all those concerned that this auction was seeing David conclude this element of his life. Last night, David revealed where the money raised today would be going: As things happen today, we will endeavour to keep this page up to date with all the latest occurrences, sale prices of items, and such like, shown below. Richard Wright ‘Wet Dream’ reissue with Steven Wilson remix release details (updated)
Some great news has been announced this afternoon, following some online rumours and speculation – Richard Wrightâs debut solo album, Wet Dream, is to be reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978 – this time in deep blue transparent marbled vinyl. It will also be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, on CD and on blu-ray which includes a 5.1 mix and never before released personal images and videos from around this period of his life. To be released on July 28th – the date that would have been his 80th birthday – it will initially be made available on CD and all streaming platforms, with the vinyl and blu-ray editions of the record being released on September 29th. Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record, it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. When originally released, post Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) and shortly before 1979’s The Wall, Wet Dream was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson’s mix is designed to give new life to the record demonstrating Wright’s brilliance. Richard wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums he released outside of Pink Floyd, the others being Broken China, from 1996, and Identity, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal videos along with a photo gallery. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. UPDATE: due to feedback on the contents of the Blu-ray, it has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. Here’s a first taste of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:
