Newcastle in for €40m Real Madrid midfielder wanted by Man United

Newcastle have entered the race for Real Madrid midfielder James Rodriguez, according to Spanish journalist Guillem Balague.

After a two-year loan spell with Bayern Munich was not made permanent, Rodriguez has spent the 2019/20 season back with ‘Los Blancos’ but has failed to recapture the form that earned him a €67.5million move to the Bernabeau back in 2014.

The Colombian has managed just 14 appearances and one goal in all competitions after an injury-hit campaign and with only one-year left on his contract, the La Liga giants will most probably look to cash in on the 28-year-old in the next transfer window.

Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Rodriguez, while the likes of Juventus, Arsenal and Everton are also said to be interested.

However, in an article on Sports Mole, Balague has now named Newcastle as a side who could make a bid to take the former Porto and Monaco star on loan if the proposed takeover of the Magpies is completed.

When speaking about possible targets for the North East outfit, Balague said: “There are other players like [Edinson] Cavani, finishing contract, James [Rodriguez], who Real Madrid want to get rid of, that they may be able to convince.

“They will have to be clever about how they use that money. They could get James on loan, Real Madrid would be happy to do so if they paid most of his wages.”

Newcastle will only be able to afford Rodriguez’s wages if the takeover of the club is finalised, however there has already been quite some delay in the deal being concluded.

It was originally reported that the Saudi-led consortium hoping to purchase the Black and Whites hoped to have everything settled by the start of May, but that has proved not to be the case with the Premier League still carrying out research to ensure the group pass their owners’ and directors’ test.

What’s more, there have also been calls for the government to look into the the Saudi public investment fund, a key part of the offer, further delaying progress.

The takeover is still expected to be given the green light eventually, although when that will be is unclear.
