NEW MUSIC: Tara Hack – Let Go

She began her music career busking in the train stations of New York City playing for thousands of commuters; now, she collaborating with notable producers and receiving airtime on radio stations like Sirius XM. Described by Sid Rosenberg of WABC as “the best”, Tara Hack is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter with a lot of attitude, passion and sincerity. The latest single from this talented songstress is ‘Let Go’.

 

 

Influenced greatly by the work of Avril Lavigne, Tara Hack decided to compose a tribute song for the Canadian pop-rock/alternative rock artist. A bittersweet love song, ‘Let Go’ touches on devotion, addiction (of a sort) and frustration when knowing it is best to “let go” but not being able to. Similar to many Avril Lavigne songs exploring the pain of heartache, ‘Let Go’ exudes desperation, pain and inner conflict.

Recorded with Grammy Award-winning producer Craig Alvin at Abbey Road Studios, ‘Let Go’ is a beautifully mastered track with an elegant layering of vocals and instrumentation. Yet, while the instrumentation is graceful and moving, it is Tara’s vocals that steal the show. Reminiscent of her beloved Avril Lavigne, Tara’s voice is sweet, smooth and heartwarming enhancing the passion and poignancy of the track.

Blinking PULSE due for 2 Blu-ray and 2 DVD deluxe box set release

On February 18th, 2022, the Restored and Re-Edited version of Pink Floyd’s P.U.L.S.E. concert film (shot on 20th October 1994 at London’s Earls Court) is set to be released as a 2 Blu-ray or 2 DVD deluxe box set, with the return of the flashing LED on the spine (as seen on the original 1995 CD release) powered by replaceable AA batteries! These deluxe packages include music videos, screen films, documentaries, rehearsal footage and more, along with a 60 page booklet. On Pink Floyd’s social channels, they mention that, in an interview from 1995 with Mojo Magazine, Nick Mason talked about the flashing LED. “Essentially, it’s a device which we thought was entertaining. It’s an idea of Storm Thorgerson’s which related to Dark Side and the pulse, and it’s a live album so the box is “alive”. After that, in terms of seriously deep meanings, one might be struggling a bit.” The original flashing LED package is much loved by the fans, and the initial announcement video leads with the blink of the light. The new box sets will be designed for easy replacement of the 2 AA batteries; the UK release in 1995 was powered by one AA, but the packaging wasn’t designed in such a way that it was easy to change without some damage, albeit internally, to the sleeve. Richard Wright’s 80th birthday marked by superb Wet Dream remix

Today would have been the much-missed, and much-loved, Richard Wright’s 80th birthday. Today sees new mixes by Steven Wilson of Richard’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, available on CD and all streaming platforms, with a deep blue transparent marbled vinyl and blu-ray edition of the album being released on September 29th. The vinyl reissue sees it on the format for the first time since its original release in 1978. It is on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, and the Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal images and videos from around this period of his life. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Since the initial announcement, the Blu-ray has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record (broadly speaking, quite overlooked or unknown by some Pink Floyd fans), it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. Yesterday evening, at the Dolby Listening Room in Soho, London, family (most of Richard’s were there), friends, and selected media were treated to a pair of playback sessions – in the pitch black – which straddled a Q&A session with Steven Wilson, hosted by Guy Pratt. First, the playback: this was the Atmos mix which is coming in September on the Blu-ray of the album, and simply put, it sounded absolutely superb. The clarity, power, and sheer musical and emotional impact made for a truly memorable night. The Q&A with Steven led to some fascinating insights into the process of finding the original master tapes (which were held at Universal in London), then getting them “baked” by Damon Iddins at Astoria (David Gilmour’s houseboat studio), before Steven could take the separate 24-track recordings and create the remix, which gives us an album which has never sounded as good as this! Here’s a glimpse at the Q&A, and the message to the attendees on a screen in the Ray Dolby Lounge (a separate screen was showing home video footage of Richard, which should be on the Blu-ray when that is released). Nick Mason – a very happy birthday to you!

All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his birthday today (January 27th). We all hope you are going to have a great day, Nick! The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a petrol head from a young boy, and cars have been – and remain – one of his major passions in life. His most recent book, Passion for Speed (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/passion-for-speed-nick-mason-and-mark-hales-2.html), is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/dvds-and-videos/passion-for-speed-ferrari-enzo-dvd-nick-mason-and-mark-2.html) focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolute essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, softback (paperback) and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news over the last few years was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. This was followed, of course, in 2019 with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 saw the release of the superb London Roundhouse concert film on audio and video formats, and was due to see the band play more shows. Sadly, the pandemic put the halt on any such plans for 2020, and 2021. The January/February 2022 tour of the US and Canada has also been postponed, and fingers are firmly crossed that these dates are rescheduled for later in the year, and that the upcoming UK and European dates – due to start in mid-April (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2022/index.php) – go ahead as planned.
