NEW MUSIC: Mojo JNR – Miles Away

Alt-Folk artist Mojo JNR releases “Miles Away”, a dreamy guitar-led soundscape inspired by the view over Swansea Bay.

Firstly, we need to talk about great artist names – Mojo JNR is just so perfect for this alt-folk project of Josh David-Read’s. Secondly, we’ll talk about great songs – “Miles Away” is a dreamscape inspired by views over Cardiff Bay. Written at the beginning of lockdown, Josh hastens to establish that this is not another one of those ‘doleful demos’ that music bloggers (read: I) have been groaning about lately. Instead, it’s an appreciation of beauty that begins with trance-like murmurings of “I’m miles away” and ends with an epic guitar solo. What’s not to love?

Josh mentions a fascination with bands such as Big Thief, Courtney Barnett and Phoebe Bridgers, and these influences can be heard in his laid-back writing and production style. The music is unfussy, but not plain. The lyrics are unpretentious, but without cliché. David-Read has a stylish flair to his sound, sophisticated in a sense that you can imagine it going down well at posh dinner parties and less posh basement venues alike. I think it must be the tasteful drenching of reverb over layers of lush guitars and very authentic-sounding instrumentation that plays throughout which gives “Miles Away” its ‘je ne sais quoi’. It’s true to its genre in the most elegant way, and sweet in its sentiment.

Be sure to follow Mojo JNR on social media to keep up with new releases and updates – you won’t regret it.
