NEW MUSIC: Jacko Hooper – Why I’m Here At All

Brighton indie folk artist Jacko Hooper releases brand new single “Why I’m Here At All”.

Oh, to think it all started with a YouTube video! When a friend caught footage of Jacko Hooper performing a few years ago, it led him out of bedroom songwriting and into the world of support slots – support slots everywhere. Flo Morrisey, James Bay, Michael Kiwanuka, Passenger, Chet Faker; you name them, Jacko’s shared an audience with them. With this impressive résumé, the music’s got to be pretty special, and Jacko Hooper doesn’t disappoint with the release of his new single “Why I’m Here At All”.

He explains that, “this song is about being in a rut and when the thoughts inside your head are telling you you’re not good enough, the chorus lifts, reminding the listener that they are enough and the people the have around them in their life are proof of that. They will never truly be alone.”

These comforting words seem to be courtesy of an artist who has been there, seen it, done that and got the t-shirt. The lyrics are true to how Jacko has seen life unfold in front of him, and he offers a warm and loving hug to his fans who have so fervently stuck by him thus far, and whom he knows have experienced the same pain that he has.

Gentle guitar plays on behind Jacko’s dulcet tones (compared on more than one occasion to those of the late, great Jeff Buckley) and the track builds to an uplifting, slightly bittersweet finale. Very rare Syd Barrett gig poster in upcoming auction

Warren Dosanjh, a school friend of Syd Barrett, and the manager of the early Barrett band Those Without, is selling some of his framed and glazed posters and other ephemera through the Cambridge based auction house Cheffins. Cheffins Auctions were the people who sold Barrett’s possessions after his death, on behalf of his family, so it is no real surprise they are being used again. The auction is being held this Thursday, October 26th, under the sale title Art and Design October 2023. You can view the details of each of the lots, on page 50-51 of Cheffins catalogue for this auction, which can be viewed through this link (https://edition.pagesuite.com/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=0c6fef7f-3de9-410d-be7e-077c9c75883b) or by clicking the thumbnail of the auction pages below: Most of the items are from exhibitions to do with Syd, held after his death. The first is a City Wakes poster (from the Syd celebration in Cambridge) signed by Storm Thorgerson and Rosemary Breen (Syd’s sister), together with assorted ephemera relating to the exhibition, a facsimile poster of the BBC Cambridgeshire and Anglia Ruskin University invitation to the unveiling of a Blue Plaque in memory of Syd; a Royal Mail Syd Barrett first day cover, numbered 658 of 3000; a copy of Melody Maker from August 1967 featuring Syd on the cover and other Syd related ephemera. There’s a VIP invitation poster for ‘Syd Barrett: A Celebration’ at the Cambridge Corn Exchange from October 2016 , featuring an unveiling of public commemorative art followed by a celebratory concert and music from Men on the Border together with the Sandviken Symphony Orchestra and lights by Peter Wynne-Willson, interpreting the music of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, at the venue where Barrett performed his last ever concert in 1972. There’s a Royal Mail limited edition, numbered giclée print of the Wish You Were Here stamp, and a poster from the Their Mortal Remains exhibition in Rome, Italy. The most unusual lot though is from a gig at the Cambridge Corn Exchange that Syd played in with a support band, The Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band. This comes with a live recording CD of the band which had Syd on guitar, and a CD of Hawkwind on the same evening. Potentially this is the only remaining example of this poster in existence. We suspect the estimate of £500-1000 will be shown to be very pessimistic…

Familiar voice heard on Floyd inspired new music

Bjorn Riis, a long time friend of Brain Damage, and the guy who runs the excellent Gilmourish.com (https://www.gilmourish.com) website, which focuses on David Gilmour’s sound and equipment, is an accomplished musician in his own right, and at the end of next month, releases a four track EP, A Fleeting Glimpse, which includes a familiar sounding vocalist. His new new single, Dark Shadows (part 1), features long-time Pink Floyd backing vocalist Durga McBroom on vocals; the track will appear on the EP, which will be released on September 30th. He told us: “My goal has been to write original material and trying to capture an authentic Floyd vibe without actually copying or doing covers. I’m performing lead vocals and guitars.” Riis is a founding member of the highly successful Norwegian progressive rock band
Airbag. With his new EP, he said: “This is a work of passion. It’s a chance for me to go back to my musical roots and pay a respectful homage. All four songs could easily have fitted on one of my albums but there is a seamless Pink Floyd vibe in all of them.” The new music is said to capture the essence of Pink Floyd, from the mellow psychedelic soundscapes of the early 70s to the bombastic stadium rock of the 80s and 90s. “I wanted to make it sound authentic, using gear and sounds that Pink Floyd would employ on a
certain song or album. It really took me back to when I started to play guitar and experiment with
tone and sounds.” Apart from Durga McBroom, other guest appearances feature Arild Brøter, from Norwegian prog band Pymlico, on drums and Per Øydir on Farfisa organ. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets announce Montreux Jazz Festival 2024 concert

Some of the more notable concert venues are the more unusual ones, and sometimes this is due to an unusual event. A perfect example of that is the Casino in Montreux, Switzerland. For those unaware, the Deep Purple song Smoke On The Water is about a fire that struck the venue while Frank Zappa and the Mothers Of Invention were there performing, in December 1971. The Montreux Jazz Festival was founded in 1967 and the Casino has always been a key venue for the event. In the 1970s, it broadened its scope from jazz to bring on various other musical genres (with Pink Floyd playing in 1970 at the Festival), and this year will see Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets join the list of musicians who have been fortunate enough to play the Festival! The band will be playing Montreux on July 13th, and tickets go on sale tomorrow (Friday, April 19th) at 12pm (11am BST) through Tickets.MontreuxJazz.com (https://tickets.montreuxjazz.com/webshop/webticket/bestseatselect?eventId=442). It is the final date to be added to the European tour this year, and nicely fills the gap between the Portoroz and Graz gigs.
