NEW MUSIC: HIMALAYAS – We Love To Hate

Cardiff Garage Rock four-piece HIMALAYAS release new single “We Love To Hate”, a noisy anthem to kickstart your week.

Forget the morning coffee; one listen to HIMALAYAS’ new single “We Love To Hate” on this cloudy Monday is a fabulously impolite awakening enough to render my caffeine addiction null and void. HIMALAYAS have been shaking us back into consciousness with their furious and fast-paced approach to Garage Rock since 2017, in the space of three years catching the ears of Huw Stephens, Greg James and Clara Amfo (BBC Radio 1), Radio X, Virgin Radio and more than twenty-one million listeners worldwide. Twenty-one million!

This band’s success shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Their formation in Cardiff marked the beginning of HIMALAYAS’ own sub-genre, defined by heavy guitar lines, dual vocals and huge anthemic hooks – even those who don’t like their music loud ‘n’ shouty will recognise familiar elements of airplay-friendly pop sensibility within the songwriting. “We Love To Hate” is similarly accessible to those being inducted into the world of Garage Rock without teetering on the edge of cheesy post-hardcore. The band describe it as a ‘wild, unerring cyclone of sound’, yet clever lyricism and massive hooks lock the song down, underpinning the cyclone so that it may not fly off and destroy a few cities. Because that could happen with a sound this big.

HIMALAYAS describe “We Love To Hate” as a song about “projecting anger outwards towards undeserving targets rather than facing up to and addressing our own problems. It’s becoming easier and easier to pin it on the most popular scapegoats than to go to the root of the problem and try to fix it.” Emotionally intelligent and badass? I can’t believe our luck. Us + Them, Delicate Sound and the Saucers’ Roundhouse releases reviewed

One of Brain Damage’s regular correspondents is Heather Fenton, a frequent visitor to the site. She had the opportunity over the Christmas period to watch three of the biggest releases that came out during 2020 – the Roger Waters Us + Them live recording, the Restored.Re-edited.Remixed version of Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound of Thunder, and Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets Live At The Roundhouse. Here, she compares and contrasts these markedly different releases. Which one comes out as her favourite? Read on to find out… I finally got round to watching and listening to all the CDs/DVDs and this is what I thought. Going back first to October, and Roger Waters Us + Them (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/roger-waters-us-them-2cd-3lp-dvd-and-blu-ray-announced.html). Having been to the live show at Manchester which was fantastic, then seeing the cinema showing in 2019 which left us feeling depressed, I said I would not get the DVD but of course I did. With Roger the live show is a spectacle and the atmosphere lifts the audience, but when its just you and the screen it lacks the lightness. Don’t get me wrong, it was still very good but even revisiting Dark Side and all he is now very removed from Pink Floyd, which is what he wanted. The interpretation is all his but even a lot of the old favourites are more of a cover version (not tribute band) and come across hard especially when interspersed with his own more recent compositions. You would not want to play this every night! Pink Floyd’s Delicate Sound of Thunder (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/the-restored.-re-edited.-remixed.-delicate-sound-of-thunder-being-rel.html) though was everything we have come to expect. The sound quality was greatly enhanced and as for the visual definition, it’s now so sharp and the colours very vivid – almost iridescent – in Time. A joy to watch and an excellent worthy addition to the collection, and maybe one day Venice will follow suit. But although Delicate Sound Of Thunder was excellent, a higher accolade would have to go to Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets Live At The Roundhouse (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/nick-masons-saucerful-of-secrets-live-at-the-roundhouse-2lp-2cd-dvd-blu-ray-ci-2.html). This leaves you with a real “feel-good factor”. Light hearted, beautifully put together, lovely interviews throughout with the band members, and fascinating how they all got together. The songs and music are perfectly executed. Bet Gary Kemp never though he would perform Vegetable Man, and the split of Atom Heart Mother was inspiring. This is the one you can play over and over again and although there’s not the visual spectacle of the other two, it allows you just to watch the action and really enjoy the performances. Aubrey Powell: Through the Prism – talk & book signing

Apologies for the lack of advance notice, but we’ve just found out this morning, that this evening – Thursday, May 19th – at 6:30pm, Hipgnosis co-founder, creative designer, photographer and filmmaker Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell talks about his recently published book Through the Prism, published by Thames & Hudson, in the Cafe of The Photographer’s Gallery in London (https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/aubrey-powell-through-prism-talk-book-signing) which is close to Oxford Circus tube station. The event is free to attend. In the talk, Powell will share intriguing stories of creative endeavour, volatile relationships, excessive lifestyles and bizarre events from the world of rock in conversation with author and music journalist Mark Blake. Two current German music magazines feature Pink Floyd

With thanks to Michael Nickel, we have two bits of news aimed principally at our friends in Germany. In that country’s stores at the moment are two magazines which may well take your interest. The first is Classic Rock Magazine (cover date September 2020), which has a multiple page report on the genesis of Pink Floyd’s 1983 album, The Final Cut – the last with Roger Waters still in the band. “Pink Floyd: The last common litter and THE FINAL CUT” delves deep into the background of the album. Elsewhere in the magazine is a major feature on Genesis, looking at their album, Selling England By The Pound. The other magazine that you might want to pick up is Rolling Stone’s German edition (again with a cover date of September 2020). In an article headed “Pink Floyd: This crazy diamond”, they take a multiple page look at the genesis of a different album – in their case (and hinted to by the title of the article) it is 1975’s Wish You Were Here, which they describe as “a sublime album about the burning of youth – and a hymn to the lost Syd Barrett”. Jimi Hendrix is featured elsewhere in the magazine, and indeed Jimi is the cover star.
