NEW MUSIC: Hardly – Savor

Nebraska’s alternative indie-pop artist Hardly releases lovelorn new single “Savor”.

Singer, guitarist and keyboardist Kolby Eisenmenger (better known as Hardly) has unveiled his second single of 2020, “Savor”. With artwork similar in abstract obscurity to that of Spring single “Tables”, you would be forgiven for expecting Hardly’s music to be experimental, a-tonal, or generally a little difficult. You’d be wrong, though – beneath the play button lurks a gentle and melancholic song under the guise of late 90s and early 00s soundscapes.

Hardly takes his inspiration from The 1975, Prince, Slowdive, Frank Ocean…the list of popular rule-breaking artists goes on. He embodies elements from his inspirations throughout “Savor”, in heavily-effected electric guitar riffs, driving beats and introspective lyrics. “‘Savor’ is about a very recent relationship I had,” Hardly explains, “I even wrote, recorded, and mixed it all while still in the relationship”. It’s clear to hear that this song is close to Eisenmenger’s heart, his words following mournful melodies from the pop-conforming first of “Savor” through to the impressionistic minute-and-a-half long B section which features a dreamy electric piano and eerily warped vocals, like indecipherable secret murmurings.

Eisenmenger describes life as he sees it – no rose-tinted glasses here. His cruelty-free and thrift-happy lifestyle paints him as a sensitive and artistic character, an image further cemented by his home-studio and heart-on-sleeve approach to making music. Hardly has more in his locker, so be sure to follow him on social media to keep up with this exciting new artist.
