However, James Maddison would pull one back for the Foxes in the 78th minute.
From there, Liverpool experienced something of collapse, conceding a further two goals in seven minutes to eventually lose the tie 3-1.
Mohamed Salah’s message
Said result saw Liverpool move 13 points adrift of table-topping Manchester City, who also have a game in hand on Jurgen Klopp’s side.
It also means that the Reds could well have slipped out of the top-four come the end of the current game week.
And at present, it doesn’t look as though the Merseyside will be turning their season around anytime soon.
Liverpool have now lost four of their last five Premier League ties, with their only victory coming away against West Ham.
Now, after their latest loss, Mohamed Salah has moved to most a heartfelt message on his Twitter account, in which he promised not to let recently results define their season:
It’s been a tough period for many reasons. We are champions and we will fight like champions, until the very end. We will not allow this season to be defined by the recent results we’ve had. That is my promise to all of you.
