Mertens ‘increasingly likely’ to leave Napoli for free in summer/ Chelsea among Premier League clubs reportedly vying for the Belgian’s signature

Mertens’ Napoli stint

Dries Mertens made the switch to Napoli in the summer of 2013, moving from Dutch outfit, PSV.

Since moving to Italy, Mertens has racked up just over 300 appearances for Napoli.

In those ties, the Belgian has found the back of the net 119 times whilst also providing 72 assists.

Mertens has also won a handful of trophies with the Naples-based club, including the Coppa Italia.

And despite being 32 years of age, Mertens has still been a key member of Napoli’s squad this term.

In 24 outings for Napoli across 2019/20, the Belgium international has scored 10 and assisted five.

Dries Mertens to the Premier League?

However, it looks as though Mertens, who turns 33 in May, could be in the twilight stages of his Napoli career.

The former PSV standout’s current deal with Napoli is set to expire in the summer of 2020.

And according to the Daily Mail, Mertens is increasingly likely to move away from Napoli on a free transfer in the summer.

The report from the Mail then claims that a number of Premier League clubs are reportedly vying for the forward’s signature.

Those clubs are said to be Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.

Chelsea were linked with the Napoli hitman during the most recent winter window.

However, the previously linked report from the Mail claims that Mertens was not prepared to leave the Serie A outfit last month as he is on the verge of breaking Marek Hamsik’s record as Napoli’s all-time top scorer.
