Man Utd ‘would be petrified’, as Liverpool step into stunning raid territory alongside La Liga giants

Liverpool have made clear their admiration for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford amid uncertainty over his future, a report has claimed.

The 24-year-old has proved his worth to his boyhood club since his debut back in 2016. However, serious doubt over his Old Trafford stay is emerging for the first time.

Rashford quashed Man Utd exit rumours in 2019 by signing a new contract. Almost three years later, though, his situation is completely different.

He has struggled for form this season, not helped by shoulder surgery in the summer which kept him out until October. And despite a fast start upon his return, he has failed to maintain that form.

As a result, he dropped out of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the Three Lions’ upcoming matches.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claimed earlier this month that Rashford is considering his future. According to the Manchester Evening News, Liverpool have sensationally come forward with interest.

Indeed, the Reds have reportedly made it clear that they ‘admire’ Rashford following his Man Utd rise.

Still, United would supposedly feel ‘petrified’ of the prospect of the forward crossing the rivalry. No player has switched directly between Man Utd and Liverpool since Phil Chisnall in 1964.

Still, Rashford is highly unlikely to accept a proposal to leave his boyhood club for Liverpool. Even if he did, the Manchester Evening News claims that United would strongly oppose the deal.

Barcelona therefore looks like a more realistic route out of Old Trafford for Rashford.

The La Liga side have reportedly ‘wasted little time’ in getting in United’s thoughts over a deal.

In any case, a source close to the player has claimed that the “phone hasn’t stopped ringing” since the exit rumours began.

United would face criticism for letting go of Rashford, who has become another local icon for the club.

However, his future forms part of a crucial few months for the Red Devils.

A number of players with their contracts expiring in the summer are definitely more likely to leave. Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani fall into that category.

Rashford has struggled under interim boss Ralf Rangnick. Still, it remains to be seen who the new manager will be and if they can reinvigorate the striker.

For now, though, Rashford will hope to focus on helping United to a top-four Premier League finish and getting back in the England squad ahead of the World Cup.
