Man United interested in signing Benfica midfielder Gedson Fernandes – Sky

Fernandes’ Benfica stint

Gedson Fernandes is a product of Benfica’s youth system.

The now 20-year-old featured 40 times for Benfica’s B side before earning himself a place in their first-team.

In total, Fernandes has already notched up 58 appearances across all competitions for Benfica’s senior side.

In those 58 ties, the midfielder has scored three and assisted seven.

The youngster had a fairly impressive 2018/19 campaign, managing to rack up 46 appearances across all competitions for the Portuguese champions.

However, Fernandes appears to have fallen down the pecking order somewhat this term.

Fernandes has made just 12 appearances across all competitions for As Águias so far this season.

Six of those outings came in the league with just two of those six appearances coming as a starter.

Man United linked

Fernandes is currently contracted to Benfica until 2023 but with his game time being limited of late, he is now being linked with a move abroad.

According to Sky Sports News, Manchester United are interested in signing Fernandes with the midfielder one of a number of targets for United ahead of the January transfer window.

The report from Sky goes on to allege that Fernandes is thought to have fallen out of favour with Benfica head coach, Bruno Lage. This may explain Fernandes’ limited minutes this season.

In terms of a fee for Fernandes, Sky put his release clause at a staggering £102m. However, Sky also state that Benfica have conceded they will not get that kind of money for an out-of-favour player.

Instead of the £102m, SSN claim Fernandes’ representatives have reportedly been in the UK to try and strike up a loan deal with a £34m option to buy with interested parties.
