Man United fluffed chance to sign Alphonso Davies before Bayern Munich switch

A former coach of Bayern Munich sensation Alphonso Davies has today revealed that Manchester United missed out on the opportunity to clinch his signature, before the teen made the move to Germany.

Bayern prodigy

Davies, 19, has emerged as one of football’s most highly-regarded young talents this season.

The Ghana-born Canadian, despite his tender years, has been afforded the opportunity to impress as part of the first-team ranks of Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, with Hans-Dieter Flick having shown particular faith in Davies’ abilities.

And to say that the versatile full-back has since gone on to take full advantage of this chance would be putting it lightly.

Davies has looked frankly sensational across a total of 29 appearances this season, showcasing the full repertoire of a player set for the very top of the game.

The Canadian international, who has already appeared 17 times for his country, has, all told, racked up a goal and 7 assists from his left-back berth to this point in the campaign.

His stellar form even saw Davies rewarded with a new contract last month, with the former Vancouver Whitecaps standout now tied to Bayern Munich until 2025.

‘Waited and waited’

As outlined above, however, had another of European football’s heavyweights acted in more decisive fashion, it could have been they, and not Bayern, who look set to benefit from Davies’ talents for years to come.

The outfit in question? Manchester United.

As revealed by one of the starlet’s former coaches, the Red Devils expressed a keen interest in Davies’ signing during Jose Mourinho’s time at Old Trafford.

However, United dallied over putting a deal in place, opening the door for Bayern to swoop, and leaving those in charge in Manchester to question what might have been.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports earlier today, Nick Huoseh, who coached Davies during his Edmonton Strikers days, explained:

‘When Jose Mourinho was there, he really wanted him but it never happened.’

‘They waited and waited, and at the end I don’t think they had the same vision and belief as Munich.’

Huoseh continued:

‘I met with one or two other clubs, but speaking with the Bayern guys and seeing their plan I thought it was the best place for Alphonso.’

‘Honestly, I was being offered things that guys might jump on but Bayern had a small squad, Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben were retiring, and it was just a good fit.’
