Major development to see Leeds star’s value escalate, giving Bielsa major hope of retention

An update on the future of Leeds United star Raphinha means the club will likely have hope of retaining the Brazilian for a longer period.

Raphinha has been one of the most impressive players in the Premier League over the past two seasons. Indeed, he has been crucial to Leeds’ play since joining for around £17million from Rennes in 2020.

The Brazilian contributed to 15 goals in 30 Premier League games last season. This term he has continued to shine, scoring eight goals and registering two assists in 19 league games so far.

It is evident the 25-year-old has had a major impact on the Whites, this year especially. In fact, he has contributed to 45 per cent of their goals in the Premier League this season.

Clearly, Marcelo Bielsa’s side would be worse off than their current 15th place in the league without him.

Raphinha has attracted attention from a host of big sides. Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Liverpool have all been reported to be targeting the winger, and West Ham were the latest side to throw their hat in the ring.

However, talks of a new contact are reportedly progressing at Leeds. According to Football Insider, a new deal could see Raphinha’s value rise to around £60million.

Obviously, he would be cheaper in the latter stages of his contract. Tying him down to an improved deal, and a longer one at that, means his value is set to rise.

That development is likely to keep some interested clubs at bay.

Although, the likes of Bayern and Chelsea could afford the the Leeds star at his increased value nonetheless.

West Ham’s Raphinha approach branded nonsensical

West Ham approached Leeds regarding the services of their talisman at the back end of the January window. Leeds rebuffed their attempts to lure the star from Elland Road.

One pundit, Gabby Agbonlahor, branded the Hammers approach nonsensical.

“West Ham going in for Raphinha was the equivalent of Burnley going in for Lingard,” he said.

“It was the most ridiculous nonsense that was put out there.

“For one, Leeds are not going to sell Raphinha when they are in a relegation battle. They will wait until the end of the season.”

Indeed, it was highly unlikely that Leeds would succumb to the offer for their most important asset midway through the campaign.
