Long term future doubtful as Chelsea defender suffers ACL injury on loan

Chelsea defender Davide Zappacosta has suffered an ACL injury during a training session with loan club Roma.

The Italian full-back returned to his homeland on temporary terms this summer, but only managed 12 minutes of Serie A action before being sidelined with injury.

After returning to full training in the week and being included in the squad for Roma’s Europa League draw with Wolfsberger on Thursday, Zappacosta has suffered a new setback.

The Serie A club confirmed that the 27-year-old has damaged his knee ligaments from a non-contact incident at training on Friday – likely ruling him out for the entire season.

With Zappacosta’s initial loan only lasting until January, it is as yet unspecified whether he will stay in Italy for his recovery or return to Chelsea.

He is the second Premier League loanee to suffer an injury at the club in recent weeks, with coach Paulo Fonseca hinting that Arsenal knew about Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s muscle problems before sending him to the Italian capital.
