Liverpool target not in talks over contract renewal, claims Spanish report

Liverpool target Ferran Torres is not in negotiations with Valencia over extending his stay with the club, according to reports coming from Spain.

The Reds have been linked with a move for the highly-rated winger in the next transfer window, while Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona are also believed to be interested.

The 20-year-old’s current contract is set to expire at the end of June 2021, and it had been reported that Valencia had opened talks with their in-demand young player as they look to fend off interest from elsewhere.

However, a story from Spanish news outlet AS say that although the La Liga side put a new deal on the table a matter of months ago, Torres has decided not to make any decisions on his future until the end of the season.

Therefore the player has not yet responded to Valencia’s proposal but, although he has not verbally rejected their offer, the club see his lack of response as a ‘no’ and are now preparing to lose him at some point in the near future.

The report adds that there now seems to be some tension between the two parties, with his manager Albert Celades making no contact with Torres since Valencia returned to training last Saturday.

These latest developments could be to Liverpool’s advantage should they choose to make an official bid for the attacker, who has been labelled as a perfect fit for Jurgen Klopp’s system.

However, they would have to pay around £90million to buy him out of the final year of his contract, which seems unlikely given the financial impact the coronavirus pandemic is likely to have on transfers.

Alternatively, they could attempt to wait an extra year and sign him on a free transfer but there is no guarantee he will still be on the market by then, particularly with some of Europe’s top clubs said to be casting a watchful eye over his situation.

Torres has scored nine goals and assisted 11 in 88 appearances for Valencia, with the majority of those coming in the 2019/20 campaign.
