Klopp’s Liverpool move into 2nd on pair of all-time PL lists with win over Southampton

Liverpool’s victory over Southampton this afternoon saw the Reds etch their names further into the history books of the English top-flight.

Liverpool continue to roll

Jurgen Klopp’s men returned to Premier League action a short time ago, in a meeting with the Saints at Anfield.

The European champions of course headed into proceedings amid an absolutely scintillating spell of form.

Liverpool had dropped just 2 points all season before today, in a stalemate with Manchester United back in October .

Since then, Klopp’s outfit had racked up 15 straight league wins, a run which had allowed them to open up a frankly-ridiculous 19 point advantage over champions Manchester City in 2nd.

And, when all was said and done on Merseyside this afternoon, the Reds further extended their lead over Pep Guardiola’s men.

After heading into the interval with the clash locked at 0-0, Liverpool exploded into life in the second-half, to eventually put Southampton to the sword by 4 goals to nil.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah (2) bagged the goals for the hosts at Anfield.

Klopp’s men closing on records

As outlined above, meanwhile, as well as aiding their staggering march towards the Premier League title, Liverpool’s latest 3-point haul today also saw the Merseysiders etch their name indellibly into the history books of the English top-flight.

The Champions League holders have now gone 42 consecutive league games without tasting defeat.

This is tied for the 2nd-longest such streak in the history of England’s top-tier, with only Arsenal’s famed ‘Invincibles’ now ahead of Liverpool:

Their victory over Southampton also saw the Reds climb into joint-2nd for the most consecutive wins in English top-flight history.

The only side left to overtake for Klopp’s men, meanwhile, are the great Liverpool of the early 1970s:
