Described as being by Sound Kartell as “electro-pop meets fidgeting indie melodies”, I was eager to discuss Simen Lyngroth‘s latest single ‘Muse’ with him. The Norwegian artist is not only a talented musician but, as in his songs, has significant thoughts to share with his audience. Released as part of his new album Looking For A Spark Like It’s Just Around The Corner, the captivating ‘Muse’ has gained a lot of positive exposure. Here’s what Simen had to say:
What or who inspired you to enter the music industry?
I started playing the guitar when I was 6 years old and became a member of a band a few years later. I think the friendship you form with the other band members and the joy of performing together inspired me to enter the music industry.
‘Muse’ is the third single from your upcoming album Looking For The Spark Like It’s Just Around The Corner. Does it differ from the other tracks in any way?
The album is written as a story in which the main character embarks on a journey in search for “the spark”. All the songs are connected by the storyline but differ in sound and character. ‘Muse’ has a darker vibe than the other songs and we also used a lot of electronics while recording it. The other songs might be more organic, but ‘Muse’ is definitely the synthetic song on the album.
What is ‘Muse’ about and what does it mean to you?
The main character finds himself feeling like a stranger in his own skin. He is confused and anxious and doesn’t know who he has become. This is one of the turning points of the story.
We’re looking at ‘Muse’ in this interview, but what about the full album Looking For The Spark Like It’s Just Around The Corner. What is the concept of the album?
My vision for this album was to create something that would be more than songs randomly put together. I wrote the album as a story and collaborated with NY writer Celia Pain and the Norwegian illustrator Thomas Emil Jacobsen. Together we combined music, short stories and drawings and tried to create a modern fairy tale. The vinyl also comes with a little book with the short stories and the drawings! For me, this is very inspiring and I am so grateful I got to work with all these talented people.
What was the writing and recording process for your album?
I am so grateful that one of my favourite musicians, Kristoffer Lo (Highasakite), wanted to produce this album. We met in a studio in Trondheim and recorded all instruments and vocals in a week. He is known for beautiful horn arrangements and also added some instruments and electronics in the post-production. It was very special for me to write this album. This is the first time I wanted to follow a storyline when writing music and it made the writing process feel like a very inspiring puzzle game!
Which is your favourite song on the album and why is it a favourite?
‘Spark’ is my favourite song from the album! For me, this song sums up the album and was very emotional to write and record. I told the producer that “this has to be the most beautiful song of the album!” I was afraid it would be too kind and wanted to add some darker electronics. I think the result is a combination of our visions for the song!
If you could collaborate with any artist (living or dead) who would it be and why?
James Blake! His songwriting is amazing and it would be such an inspiration to get to work with him.
How would you describe the music you are currently making?
The music I am making has is Nordic indie-pop. I tend to support my fragile voice with electronics and rock-elements.
What’s the most surprising self-realisation you have had?
I mainly live in the future or in the past. I am working on embracing the now.
What can we expect from Simen Lyngroth in 2020?
It’s not easy to say what to expect in 2020 due to the pandemic. I am still very happy that I released my album and glad it’s out there on the internet and the online music stores!
