Hailing from Guildford, Edge of Desire is an alternative-rock band ready to dominate your thoughts and playlists. Using earth-shattering riffs and psychedelic undertones, the relatively new trio is coming out with full force. We spoke with frontman Daniel Fraser and bassist Caleb Harley about their new EP Lost, discovering new music and much more!
Why did you choose to enter the music industry?
Dan: When I was 13, I was shown some incredible live sets by bands like Queen, Muse, MCR, U2 and many more. I knew then that I needed to be doing that. I started writing more and learning more about music as a creative outlet which then took me down the road to where I am now.
What can you tell us about Lost?
Caleb: Lost is a personal but deeply relatable release. Dan touches on a lot of things we all deal with as humans, whether that be emotional or situational, from heartbreak to breaking down the barriers and judgements that people wrongly put on each other. Each track confronts these human moments in an honest but humble way.
What was the recording and writing process like?
Dan: The recording process was quite fun. I produced the record with producer Ed Stokes. To start off, we all got into the studio with an awesome drummer, Katie Godsmark, to track drums based on my demo tracks. Ed and I then took the drum stems and recorded and produced the rest of the EP in his home studio. It was super fun and I learned a lot from Ed!
What do you hope people take from your music?
Caleb: We hope people connect emotionally. I think we’ve definitely all felt one thing or another that is spoken about on the EP and with the variation of genres throughout Lost there’s something for anyone to connect with.
Which is more challenging for you – melody or lyrics?
Dan: Lyrics. The melody always comes to me very quickly and quite easily, but getting the right words to get the message across has always been harder. However, I find the better the lyrics the better the melody. So, spending time figuring out what you are trying to say is so important and, in the end, will result in a much better and honest song.
Describe your music in three words.
Caleb: Bold, intense, intimate.
What do you think is the best way to discover new music?
Dan: Streaming services like Spotify, Apple Music, etc. The music is right there and there’s so much of it. I tend to click on related artists of an artist I like then click their related artists and so on. I find some hidden gems this way. I discovered this artist called Ashlee who is incredible!
What does the future hold for you?
Dan: Writing. A lot of writing. We have just released an EP and hope at some point to play it live, but for now, I’m stuck in my studio writing!
What advice do you have for any person planning to become a musician?
Dan: Don’t be afraid to write bad songs. I feel like this is the biggest “writer’s block” wanting to make the perfect song every time, but it doesn’t work like that. Don’t be afraid to just try stuff. It’s okay if it goes wrong, you’ll learn from it and write something better and better until you have something special.
