Goalless Newcastle ace up for sale as £6m transfer loss forecasted within clearout

Newcastle United are willing to sell Miguel Almiron for less than they bought him for at the end of the season, a report has revealed.

Almiron was Newcastle’s record signing when they bought him from Atlanta United in January 2019. The deal cost them in the region of £21m. However, a lack of goalscoring output has overshadowed his time at St James’ Park.

Despite that, he remained a regular feature under Rafael Benitez and Steve Bruce. Current Magpies boss Eddie Howe has been the one to draw the line, though.

Since Howe took charge, Almiron has managed 13 appearances, but never lasted 90 minutes. Over the course of the entire season, he is yet to contribute a goal or assist. Now, it appears this season could be his last on Tyneside.

According to Football Insider, Newcastle have decided they are going to put Almiron up for sale in the summer. What’s more, they are prepared to accept a lower fee than what they paid for him.

The online outlet relays that £15m should be enough for interested parties to prise the Paraguay international away.

Even by taking a loss on him, Newcastle will be able to clear space on the wage bill and reinvest in a more reliable replacement.

And with only two years left on his contract, it could be the ideal time for Newcastle to cash in on the 28-year-old before his value drops any further.

Almiron to be sacrificed for upgrade

The Magpies are the club Almiron has represented the most in his career, with 115 appearances. However, there may not be too many more to add if they get their way.

Their Saudi-backed owners are keen to invest in the squad in the summer, just as they did in January. With Premier League survival looking more likely, they would want to show their ambition.

The strategy will include finding upgrades on underperforming players like Almiron, who may subsequently have to find a new club.

That means his agent will have his work cut out for him, after claiming back in October that his client would be one of the players the new project at Newcastle would be built around.

Almiron has not done anything to justify that belief on the pitch since and now risks a sale.
